Personal Description:

Rex is the UK's number one exponent of the mandolin and over the last 5 years, along side his musical companion – Miranda Sykes – has built a stellar reputation as one of the finest and most sought after live acts on the English folk and roots scene. Rex's career on the mandolin began when he founded the Scoville Units with Banjo player Leon Hunt and guitarist Ed Boyd. Since then he has gone on to work with Kate Rusby, Cara Dillon, Show Of Hands, Steve Knightly, Brian Finnegan, Aidan O'Rourke and Damion O'Kane amongst many others. Rex is also very experienced in the studio. Whether it's electronic music production and sound design or studio recording and mixing you're interested in, Rex can show you how the pros do it.

Tutoring Experience:

Rex has also built a strong reputation as a mandolin instructor. His years of involvement with the world renowned Sore Fingers Summer Schools music camp have gained him a wealth of experience teaching many forms of music to all levels of ability, not to mention an extensive collection of focused lesson plans and repertoire. As one of his students once said “ you could write what he doesn't know about the mandolin on the back of a plectrum”.

Tutoring Approach:

Rex is a seasoned mandolin instructor both in one-to-one and workshop based scenarios. Whether you've been playing for twenty minutes or twenty years, your needs can be catered for and your goals achieved with the right approach. His teaching style is milestone based – where exercises and repertoire are assigned to facilitate incremental improvement over time. Whilst having grand long term goals is a good thing, without little milestones to aim for in the interim (even with all the will power in the world), motivation and focus can easily be lost, despondence can set in and a student can just give up. Rex's aim is to prevent that by keeping you motivated and inspired with a steady flow of new and stimulating material that'll gently push you forward. You still have to do the work, but there are many doors through which Rex can lead you.
