Personal Description:

My name's Rebecca, and I'm a postgraduate student at the Royal Northern College of Music where I'm studying for a masters in violin performance. I hold a First Class BA (Hons) from Durham University, where I read music, specialising in performance and was involved in a rich variety of musical genres. I love teaching and believe music is something everyone should have the chance to enjoy, whatever your ultimate aims!

As a student, my schedule is flexible, and would occasionally have to timetable teaching around other commitments.

Tutoring Experience:

I began teaching the violin in a middle school in Northumberland, a position which I held for two years and which included teaching group and individual violin classes and running a string ensemble. All students were entered for ABRSM graded exams. During my time at university, I continued to teach privately and undertook some cover work at the Sage Gateshead's Centre for Advanced Training, regularly covering 1:1 lessons and chamber music coaching.

Tutoring Approach:

First and foremost, I hope to pass on an enjoyment of music to my students and firmly believe that whilst lessons should be serious and productive, they should also be inspiring and exciting. I teach using a range of materials and encourage students to follow the ABRSM graded exams with the aim of passing at least one grade per year: for absolute beginners, it can take a little longer to reach grade 1, but a 'Prep Test' proves to be a first stepping stone. To make progress and get the most from learning, I emphasise the importance of regular practice and for younger pupils, encourage parental involvement. I also promote regular performances amongst my pupils and have previously hosted informal christmas concerts where students play in a relaxed environment, followed by mince pies!
