Personal Description:

My name’s Raph, or Raphael. I’ve been playing piano and clarinet since I was 5 years old. As a student I progressed through the ABRSM Graded exams and achieved my Grade 8 certificate in 2007 on both instruments. I completed A-Levels in Music and Music Technology in the same year, giving me a well rounded knowledge of Music Theory, Aural, Composition and Performance Skills. Throughout my 20s I played piano and guitar in several touring bands, having taught myself to play rock and indie/pop styles. Today I enjoy playing everything from Chopin and Brahms to Springsteen and Elton John.

I have experience working with adults and children including people from vulnerable groups, teaching Music as well as other subjects. I hold a PVG certificate and I am happy to discuss ways in which I can make my lessons more accessible, or ways I can meet any other specific needs.

Getting to know my students is a hugely important part of the teaching process for me. This is how I can make the lessons enjoyable: by knowing their needs, interests, likes and dislikes.

Tutoring Experience:

I have experience working with adults and children including people from vulnerable groups, teaching Music as well as other subjects. I hold a PVG certificate and I am happy to discuss ways in which I can make my lessons more accessible, or ways I can meet any other specific needs.

Tutoring Approach:

I always start by exploring what a student can already do, what they most enjoy playing, and what they want to achieve with their lessons. From there it really depends! For any player, though, I will try to incorporate some Technique (scales, arpeggios, drills) some Repertoire (pieces) and something Creative (Improvisation or Composition) in each lesson. Depending on the student I usually then give notes and exercises for playing at home between lessons. However, this can all be tailored for the age group, the level of commitment and importantly the style that is most suited to the student. (If you just want to have lessons once a week but can't commit to practicing at home, we can work with that!)

I am committed to making music lessons accessible: If you are low-waged, unemployed or if price is in some other way a barrier for you, and you would like to have lessons, please get in touch so that we can try to make something work.

Under normal circumstances I can give lessons from my home in Glasgow or I can come to you, anywhere in the Greater Glasgow area. Even if you don’t have a piano at home, don’t worry, I can bring an electronic weighted keyboard for you to play. So whatever keyboard you do or don’t have at home, I can still give you lessons.
