Personal Description:
I am a freelance music tutor based in the west end of Glasgow. I am a first study double bassist with a bachelors degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where I studied with Una MacGlone and Tom Berry. I studied voice as a second instrument with Margaret Izatt. In addition to these instruments I am a competent string player on the violin, cello and the ukulele.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching for many years. I provided bespoke music workshops to the children of Woodside Nursery School in 2017/18, after which I have worked in Colourstrings classes with esteemed community musician Naheed Cruickshank, with focus on developing musicianship skills pre-instrumental learning. I also led musicianship classes at the Diane Mitchel Music school where I taught classes to parents and babies as well as children aged 4 - 10.
I currently teach with the Babystrings Project, providing string instruction to primary school children, P1-4, from Glasgow City Council. I tutor the double basses at the Glasgow Schools String Sinfonia at the City Halls in addition to some private pupils.
Tutoring Approach:
I am a firm believer in the Kodaly Methodology and I use this approach in my teaching to build musicianship skills through singing games and rhymes. My lessons are always fun as I believe music should be played first and formost for enjoyment and there is no presssure for my pupils to sit exams if they do not wish to. I like to break music theory down into digestible blocks of information, allowing young students in particular to develop a strong understanding of concepts either while learning to play an instrument or for musicianship's own sake.
I am happy to teach pupils of all ages.
