Personal Description:

I graduated from Magdalene College, Cambridge in June 2017 with an MSc (1st class) and BA (1st class) in Natural Sciences. During my time at Cambridge, I was Organ Scholar at Magdalene College (2013-2016), St John's Voices (2016-2017) and Graduate Organ Scholar at Our Lady and the English Martyrs Church (2016-2017). As well as receiving prizes for achieving outstanding results, I was the recipient of the Macfarlane-Grieve Prize, Garrett Prize and a Lincoln Award for music from my college. In March 2017, I became the first female winner of the Brian Runnett Competition for organ performance.

Tutoring Experience:

My experience in music education began in 2011 through my work as an accompanist and piano teacher for the Thetford Music Project, a community charity which exists to encourage and generate young people's interest in music. Over the last seven years, I have taught both piano, organ and music theory from early years up to Grade 8 standard and continued my work as a choir leader for the linked charity, Thetford Voices.

Since graduating, I have moved to Brentwood, where I work as Assistant Director of Music and Director of the Girls' Choir at St Thomas' Church. As part of this role I am responsible for training the choristers in music theory, aural training, and singing.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring style, whilst focused on achieving high results, aims to ensure that a student's musical education does not begin and end with their examinations. In addition to to embedding principles of good musicianship and music theory gradually across lessons, I encourage students to build up a strong technical foundation using a range of technical exercises. For grade examinations, I introduce scales and arpeggios of the appropriate grade alongside either previous exam pieces or pieces of similar difficulty, only moving on to current examination pieces once students have the technical exercises securely under their fingers. This avoids the common situation where students race ahead with their pieces which then stagnate as the scales are brought up to scratch.
