Personal Description:

I am Peter, and I am a keen semi-professional brass player and self employed vintage/classic car restorer.

I have been playing the Trumpet for over 20 years, starting as a young child as soon as my front teeth came through.
I was inspired after hearing Louis Armstrong records, coupled with the intro of 'Your Latest Trick' by Dire Straits.

I gained a Merit in my Grade 8 Trumpet exam with Trinity Guildhall, having jumped straight onto Grades 3 and 5 as a teenager.
I played in many youth and school bands, and covered many genres and styles.
I have competed in Brass Bands up to the 1st section, covering parts on Soprano Cornet, Solo Cornet, Flugel Horn, Tenor Horn and Euphonium.

I currently play 2nd Trumpet in a Dance Band, and Principal Cornet in a non-contesting Silver Band. I regularly 'dep' for bands in the area, but I have traveled as far afield as Lowestoft and even Cologne to perform.

I also carry out repairs and servicing to Brass Instruments, and have a small stock of instruments of my own to cover short periods of time when an instrument is needed and there is no back up available.

Tutoring Experience:

Currently, my teaching experience is limited to having taught the basic fundamentals to a friend whilst at School, and short coaching sessions to less experienced band members during rehearsals. To my satisfaction, the lessons and coaching have worked and the playing of the respective bands has improved markedly.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to make my teaching as simple and accessible as possible, so students gain as much from their time with me as they can.
I place strong emphasis on quality of tone and intonation, breath control and efficiency. I also focus on tonguing technique and clarity, fingering speed and precision, and the co-ordination of fingering and tonguing.
However, as many brass musicians will perform with groups and bands containing one or more other brass instruments, I also encourage the attributes needed for ensemble playing.
My experience will be put to best use instructing students with a solid grasp of brass playing technique and good basic knowledge of musical theory.
