Personal Description:

I am a classically trained pianist and double bassist, and have recently graduated with an MA (distinction) in performance from the University of York. During my five years studying there I have gained valuable experience performing both with the department and professionally on piano, harpsichord, organ, clavichord and fortepiano as a soloist, accompanist and in ensembles. I also resided as principal double bassist to the University of York Symphony Orchestra, principal bassist to the Baroque ensemble, and regularly featured in the department's contemporary and jazz concerts. I have worked professionally as solo pianist and an orchestral bassist for many ensembles and as double bassist in the 50's rock 'n' roll bands The Blackjacks and The Runawayz.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught privately since completing my Bachelors degree in 2014, and between September 2017 and January 2018 taught piano and music theory in collaboration with Enact Music, Belfast.

Tutoring Approach:

Every pupils’ individuality is considered when tailoring lessons, depending on why they want to learn, what musical styles they wish to play, and how far they wish to progress. Generally, students will begin with simple pieces, exercises and basic scales, always stressing the need for quality of tone and musicality. When the student is ready, they could work towards ABRSM graded exams if they so wish, or move onto more advanced material. A thorough knowledge of music theory is essential for quality playing, and learning this alongside practical work is encouraged.
