Personal Description:

I live in Milton Keynes and I teach, normally on a one-to-one basis, at my Pennyland Music teaching and recording studio in Pennyland which is a mile NE of the centre of Milton Keynes. The cost for this is £30 per one-hour lesson. However I can accommodate two students who want to learn together at a total cost of £45 per joint lesson.Tuition is available to adults 15 and above as the content of the course is not suitable for young children. As well as teaching guitar and bass, I also teach Principles of Music and offer a teaching course on Recording, Music Technology, Arranging and Music Production using a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) based on Sonar (by Cakewalk) which I have used for over 25 years and which I have found to be the best DAW software available.I have played guitar professionally and semi-professionally for over 40 years. I also present several music workshop seminars at the Stables Theatre (Wavendon, Milton Keynes) which include "The Basic Principles of Music", "More Principles of Music", "Making Up Chord Sequences" , "Guitar for Absolute Beginners", "Guitar for Improvers", Introduction to Finger-Style Guitar" and "Self Accompanied Finger-Style Guitar Playing" I am a qualified school teacher and a member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors. Throughout my years of teaching and playing, I am frequently disappointed by the poor standards of music tuition I have come across and the complicated elitist ways in which it is all too often taught when all most students want is to learn how to play along to songs they like for fun without having to learn lots of theory and terminology they will never use. So I developed my own course to teach guitar to show how simple music can be. Because music really is very simple - if it's taught in the right way. Finally, the answer to that age-old question "Do I have to learn how to read music?" is an emphatic NO - not if you don't want to! Not reading music didn't stop Paul McCartney - or John Lennon, Dave Brubeck, Glen Campbell, Louis Armstrong … along with a wealth of other famous and successful non-reading musicians!

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching guitar for 18 years in my teaching and recording studio in Pennyland, Milton Keynes. I teach electric, acoustic and classical guitar as well as music theory and music recording and production using the latest in music technology software. I am a qualified teacher - I taught Maths and Physics in a secondary school in Cardiff before entering the telecommunications industry. As well as guitar, I also teach the principles of music theory (on which I present a range of 1-day workshops at the Stables, Wavendon, Milton Keynes) entitled "Basic Principles of Music" parts 1 and 2, "How to Make Up Chord Sequences" and "Guitar for Absolute Beginners".
I also teach digital music technology as well as arrangements, production and recording techniques at my Pennyland studio.

Tutoring Approach:

I have two alternative approaches to teaching guitar. The first is for those who simply want to learn for fun so they can play along with their friends and their favourite music. The second is for those aspiring to obtain music exam grade certificates. Which one is right for you? It depends on what you want from your lessons. You don't need to decide right away because much of what I teach is common to both approaches. For the first approach – I call it learning "social” guitar - I teach my own course called “Learning HOW to Play Guitar” with the emphasis on HOW. As beginners learn some simple basic principles of music, they begin to understand what they are doing and why rather than learning parrot-fashion from tabs on the Internet. They learn how to work out chord sequences for songs, how to make up lead riffs, play guitar instrumentals and construct bass runs. For those who have been playing for some time, this course provides a structural framework to give direction and fill in the gaps by helping you understand what you have been doing and why. This naturally helps you advance your playing further. For those wanting to obtain accredited music theory examination grades and sit their exams - the second approach I referred to above - lessons are augmented and structured to include the Registry of Guitar Tutors (RGT) and London College of Music (LCM) Popular Music syllabus to prepare you for these internationally recognised exams all the way up to Grade 8. The RGT has produced a wealth of excellent quality easy-to-read handbooks covering the LCM exam syllabus and students are advised at the appropriate time which of these they might like to buy to optimise their potential and achievements in the exams. More details are available on my Pennyland Music web site.
