Personal Description:

My name is Penny and I am a dedicated and passionate music teacher who offers lessons in and around the Glasgow area.

I teach all levels from beginners to advanced and also have a varied background in music making, ranging from classical to folk music and reading off sheet music to improvising.

I currently lead the London City Philharmonic and I'm deputy leader of the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra. I am also part of the Live Music Now Scotland scheme which provide live music to people throughout our communities, especially those who wouldn't normally have access to it.

I have played with many ensembles including the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra in Finland, the London Euphonia Orchestra, the London Incidental Orchestra, the Philharmonia Britannica and GoodenSemble. I have also played under the batons of Sakari Oramo, Roy Goodman, Gerry Cornelius and Diego Masson to name a few.

I am an extremely organised and self-motivated musician and I have been expanding my portfolio career whilst studying full time with John Crawford at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where I graduated in 2018. In 2016 I went on an Erasmus Exchange to Finland where I studied with Reijo Tunkkari and Kreeta-Maria Kentala, and have since studied with Clare Thompson and Joshua Fisher.

I've also taken part in a number of masterclasses and courses including:
- Chamber masterclass with Yuri Zhislin in Finland
- Adam Sutherland Folk Fiddle course in Glasgow
- Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas Folk Fiddle Course in Skye
- Oxford Cello School, which included masterclasses with Lionel Handy and Alexander Boyarsky
- English Schools Orchestra
- Pro Corda

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching privately and also at schools for several years now. I have guided many of my students through the exam system with merit and distinction level passes. I am also a violin tutor at the Hackney Youth Orchestra Trust and have worked with organisations including Animate Orchestra, Stretto Music, Greenwich Music Hub, Music Maestros, The Future Music Group, Trinity Laban's Teenies Group and Boppin' Bunnies music classes for babies and toddlers.

All of these experiences have taught me how to be flexible and patient when it comes to instrumental teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor the lesson to the student’s individual needs and personality whilst creating an inspiring and positive atmosphere. My number one goal is for my students to have an enjoyable time in my lessons (and at any age!)

I let the student decide on which path they wish to take, be it exams, auditions, performances, or just for fun!
