Personal Description:
Graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a Master`s degree in 2017 and former student of Chetham`s School of Music. LPO Foyle Future First in 2017/18 and currently a practicing freelance musician and teacher. 6+ years of teaching experience on both CELLO and PIANO from ages 5 upwards. I can offer tuition towards the graded exams, help to supervise practice or teach you how to play just for the joy of it.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching privately since 2014 and in primary schools for the last 3-4 years. More than happy teaching all levels of player, from absolute beginner to grade 8+ and have experience teaching all age groups. I have taken part in numerous workshops in primary schools and have completed a course in Creative Learning and Participation to aid with my teaching.
Like many teachers, the pandemic resulted in me having to move all teaching online.
At first I was a little tentative as I had always been of the belief that there was no substitute for in person lessons. Having now been teaching via zoom/skype for almost 2 years, I can honestly say that not one of my students` progression has slowed and that many have actually excelled once things moved online.
The ability to either stop video or audio in a zoom meeting has proved to be a particularly useful feature (especially with younger children) as you can minimize any distractions and really get them to focus on any specific task. The interactive `stickers` have also proved to be a great hit (what child isn`t going to love a sticker that actually moves?!)
Tutoring Approach:
I am firmly of the belief that each and every student has a different way of learning and therefore I think it is essential that any teacher is able to adapt their teaching style accordingly. Technical proficiency comes first and foremost upon beginning lessons on any instrument however without developing a real joy and interest in the music itself, being technically sound will only get you so far.
In my experience having a one-size-fits-all approach is far from the most effective way to motivate students or to help them advance in their chosen study and it is for that reason that I try to tailor not only the way I teach each student but also where possible, any repertoire they are working on.
