Personal Description:

Hello, I'm Olivia. I'm currently studying for a postgraduate degree at Birmingham Conservatoire on the oboe under Jenni Phillips and Emmet Byrne.

I recently graduated from Cardiff University with a First Class degree in BMus Music (Hons) where I was awarded the Elizabeth Griffiths Prize for Outstanding Orchestral and Solo Performance (2016), and an Undergraduate Scholarship for academic achievement (2014). Throughout my time at Cardiff University I was Principal Oboe of Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Operatic Society Orchestra and Wind Orchestra, and acted as the Ensembles Coordinator for the Music Society in the 2015/16 academic year.

As well as holding ABRSM Grade 8 (Distinction) in the oboe and achieving 80% (First Class grade) in my final undergraduate recital, my academic music degree has taught me the necessary skills to teach Music Theory and Music History, in which 20th-century British Music, 19th- to 20th-century ballet and European Modernism are my specialisms.

Tutoring Experience:

I am a confident teacher, and am currently enrolled on a teaching module at Birmingham Conservatoire, which has not only taught me the different skills and approaches to teaching music, but also has allowed me to undertake observations with the Birmingham Music Service (Services for Education). I also act as a mentor for the Junior Conservatoire and help talented young musicians in the Wind Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that music tuition should be first and foremost fun, and each lesson should cover a wide range of skills from scales to improvisation. I am also keen on the involvement of parents where applicable, as I believe a support network of loved ones (your audience!) is key to the enjoyment of learning an instrument. I typically follow the ABRSM Grade system, however tailor lessons and long-term goals to the individual needs and wishes of the pupil.
