Information About Oliver - Lewisham teacher
This is how 2 referees rated Oliver:
Having started playing the guitar and bass guitar at 12 years old, I grew up playing in rock, pop and funk bands. During my teenage years I also achieved Grade 5 on classical piano, saxophone and music theory. At age 16 I began playing jazz and soul and was offered a place on the Junior Jazz Course on Bass Guitar at The Royal Academy of Music, which I attended at weekends from age 16 to age 18. I was then offered a place on Bass Guitar on the undergraduate jazz course at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and will receive my honours degree in July 2020.
In all this time I have been fortunate enough to play in many prestigious music venues such as Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, the Vortex Jazz Club, Jazz@Pizza Express Soho, the Village Underground, the Southbank Centre, the 606 Jazz Club and many more. Currently I play for a handful of up and coming pop and jazz artists, and this has given me opportunities to travel all over the continent playing music.
Growing up playing lots of different styles of music has given me an understanding of a wide range of different playing techniques and musical vocabulary, and therefore I feel that I can facilitate the teaching of students who wish to learn how to play in multiple musical genres.
I have been teaching students of all ages one-to-one guitar and bass lessons since the age of 17. I have also co-lead many pop, rock and jazz workshops for students aged between 8 years old and 70 years old. These workshops included working on and exploring ensemble playing, jazz harmony, composition and songwriting.
Although there are important instrumental aspects that need to be learnt, I believe it's equally important to focus on what the student wishes to learn; whether that be improving playing techniques, ear training, learning songs and repertoire, or any other areas of playing that they feel they would like to improve.
I have developed a collection of exercises that are designed to improve different aspects of guitar and bass playing such as finger strengthening routines, putting scales into context to enhance improvisation skills, metronome practise, and much more. What is very important to me is to inspire my students to achieve their artistic potential, through engaging and enjoyable lessons.
