Personal Description:

Since playing in classical orchestras as a teenager, as an adult I have discovered a love of folk music and improvising. I currently play regularly in informal church worship nights, but my experience includes playing various gigs with the Oxford University Ceilidh Band, as well as playing in a jazz trio at weddings. I also sing in a local choir, enjoy listening to jazz and classical music on my record player, and generally making and enjoying music in all contexts!

Tutoring Experience:

I am currently self-employed as a tutor and also teach beginner and intermediate violin in my free time, for both adults and children. Other teaching and coaching experience includes:
- Running a primary school art class for a group of underprivileged girls in rural Mozambique
- Establishing and running a breakfast reading club for Year 7 students struggling with their reading, during my time in sixth form
- Coaching a novice women's rowing team during my time at University

Tutoring Approach:

My roots are in classical music and training, so I emphasise developing sound technique, expressive musicianship and effective practice techniques. However, I want to motivate my students to truly enjoy playing and to discover their own individual musical expression. In recent years I have particularly enjoyed exploring jazz violin and folk fiddle. I aim to bring a similarly broad representation of music to my students and to help them find what they enjoy playing most.
I am happy to enter students for ABRSM or Trinity exams, but I don't see exams as an end in themselves and my priority is to ensure that my students are enjoying the violin and developing as players.
