This is how 2 referees rated Nikki:
Hi. I am a flute player from New Zealand and a mother of two, living in Wokingham. Prior to coming to the UK, I completed a Bachelor and Master of Music (Honours) in Flute Performance at Auckland University (New Zealand). The latter being a two-year research and performance degree including solo, orchestral and chamber music recital work, along with a study of orchestration and research focused on performance practice.
Here in the UK, I pursued a Doctoral research degree - The Flute Concertos of Antonio Mahaut (1785 – 1835) - A study of the previously unknown flute concertos of Antonio Mahaut with special emphasis on late-Baroque/ early-Classical performance practice. In 1998 I was contracted to provide a new entry for Mahaut in the latest edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and I am currently preparing edited editions of Mahaut’s Concerti and Sonatas (previously unpublished).
I have played in numerous orchestras (including the Auckland Philharmonia) and chamber groups throughout my professional life and have enjoyed a long working association with the composer/conductor Carl Davis, acting as his concert librarian and preparing his compositional work for publication or recording.
My teaching and performance experience spans twenty-five years; throughout my time studying solo and orchestral flute performance at university and continuing during my years of post-graduate Doctoral music research and beyond. I am experienced in all levels of teaching from beginners to advanced students, and have spent many years as an itinerant flute teacher at various highly-regarded schools. This included individual and group tuition of flute, recorder, music theory and rehearsal of children’s orchestra and other chamber groups. During my years as a young teacher/performer, I discovered a great love of teaching at all levels which has continued throughout my professional life.
I have also taught music theory, alongside flute and recorder and as an individual subject.
I strive to make my lessons both relaxed and fun at all times.Guiding a student to understand the music they are playing and finding ways to inspire and teach them skills gives me enormous pleasure. I have found that it also teaches me much about my own playing and performance which, in turn, makes me a more confident teacher.
Many of my students have achieved success in examinations, a number reaching Distinction. I am happy to put students through Royal Schools, Trinity College and Guildhall exams, although I do not push students to do them if they wish not to.
I am happy to teach at home or travel to you within a short distance.
