Personal Description:

I have been teaching woodwind and brass for over 30 years in Cornwall, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. I was the Musical Director of a brass band in Cornwall for five years and a Youth Symphonic Wind Band in Lincolnshire for ten years. My movement around the country are as a result of my service in the Royal Air Force, from which I have now retired.

Tutoring Experience:

I am happy teaching students to play for pleasure and/or to pass grades. I have taught up to and including Grade 8 and currently have past students performing with the Marine Bands and other Military Bands and a previous student currently studying at the Royal School of Music. Over the past 30 years I have taught predominantly woodwind and brass and specialise in teaching children and young people (8 years and over) although increasing numbers of parents - motivated by their children's success have also asked for lessons

Tutoring Approach:

I make it clear from the outset that I am happy to either teach so that the student can play for their own pleasure and/or entertainment - essentially - music as a hobby or pass time - or I am happy to teach so the student can take Grades in their chosen instrument. I explain that this requires a slightly different approach both from the students point of view and the teachers. That isn't to say that if a student sets off on one course that they can't change direction.
