Personal Description:

Nick was born in Croydon, south London in 1981.

At the age of 12 he started to learn the piano but later switched to the guitar.

He studied music at Croydon College, obtained a National Diploma in Performing Arts, and later went on to Cambridge Regional College where he achieved a Higher National Diploma in Popular Music.

Nick graduated with a BMus Honours Degree in Jazz, Popular and Commercial Music at Newcastle College in 2006.

Tutoring Experience:

For a few years, he worked as a guitar teacher for an independent music school in Wimbledon, a teaching assistant for children with special needs, and gained some experience of working in schools.

Nick worked for Croydon Music and Arts as an Instrumental Music Teacher in primary schools from 2009-2017 where he developed valuable teaching and learning skills for electric guitar, acoustic guitar, ukulele, keyboard, voice, drum-kit. He led a rock ensemble at Croydon’s Center for Young Musicians and delivered a contribution to a variety of shows and performances.

During his later years at Croydon Music and Arts he also attended night school at Croydon Adult Learning and Training (CALAT) and Sutton College of Learning (SCOLA) and completed recitals in both electric and classical guitar through Trinity College London, he also started his own private guitar tutoring business.
In 2017, Nick was sponsored by Bromley Schools Collegiate to train and become a secondary school music teacher and in 2018 was awarded Qualified Teacher Status and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Canterbury Christ Church University. Nick later completed the Newly Qualified Teacher and Recently Qualified Teacher requirements for full qualification.

Nick is currently working for Sutton Music Service and embarking on a freelance music teaching career.

Tutoring Approach:

I have been actively involved in music for twenty-five years, in that time I have learned to play instruments to a high standard across a broad range of styles, compose using techniques required for a wide variety of idioms, found my inner voice for tonal improvisation and gained a deep understanding within the growth of appraising and chronology of music. The content of these expertise combined with models for higher order thinking (blooms taxonomy) allow me to create a range of imaginative teaching and learning activities, and once assembled become increasingly more complex. This provides access for students to progress from basic cognitive functions to more sophisticated reasoning and empowering students with a deeper interpretation (whilst still providing differentiation across all abilities).

I like to create lesson structures in which the students are learning a single topic in innumerable ways utilizing theory, technology, and instruments/voices where appropriate. My ethos is that: it is important to create a rich and learning environment, a space that we can hear, see, feel and that creates an opportunity for interaction with others in both new and different ways.

Education has allowed me to extend my proficiency in more areas of music, areas that I may have not had the opportunity to further understand or embed into my own command, this has been realised through a growth mindset and the discipline required to achieve. The impact is; students are not only taught the disciplines of performance, composition and appraising found through the musical mainstream of exam board specifications, but also through the capacity of extensive concepts in other episodical expansions in music with the personal evolution for eminence.

I have a fascination with cross curricular links, I become particularly engrossed in the interrelation between music and other subjects within numerical and language systems, this allows learners to discover the correlation within their own curiosity derived from prior learning, I am certain it is by making these links that students find opulence in all learning, luxuriance in research and absorb into the implementation and conveyance of cultural capital.

To ensure quality assurance, I have researched and implemented pedagogy into classroom practice, this has allowed me to develop my teaching style (which I would describe as relaxed, with highly focused relaxed energy, but also a presence that us discreetly evasive), this comfort allows the us to create trusted team working relationships rooted mutual respect, and grants me articulated and clear communication.

I possess a punctual and flexible personality with a genuine willingness to learn and undertake further training.

I want to teach not only to share the benefits and enjoyment of making music through a love of learning, but also, because I am dedicated to the students as learners and want to profoundly impact their lives.
