Personal Description:

I am an experienced fiddle player specialising in traditional Irish music. I hold grade 8 violin (Trinity Guildhall), but have concentrated on folk music for the past 10 years. I have competed nationally in traditional music competitions, and performed at many large folk festivals with a variety of acts.

At school, I found learning folk a more laid-back, social and personal process than the grades system. It involved learning many common songs and tunes, but I was also encouraged to use my ears and think creatively to develop an individual style. You'll notice that when a group of folk musicians play a tune together in a session, they never play exactly the same notes! Learning folk music is also great for developing non-technical skills such as playing by ear, improvisation, and accompaniment.

I'm looking to help students explore folk music in its own right, or as a way of complementing other studies.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been a volunteer fiddle tutor with Coventry Comhaltas (an international traditional Irish music society), and have co-ran workshops at folk festivals and private events. I have privately tutored young students to a Grade 3 ABRSM standard.

Tutoring Approach:

Folk music is all about people coming together to share common tunes and songs. The thing that makes folk distinctive from other genres is the space it gives musicians to put their own personal spin on things. Learning folk is like learning a new language - you'll have to learn the words, but how you chose to put them together is up to you! Fundamental technical skills have to be learnt and practised, but after that folk is all about finding your own lilt. Teaching partly by ear, encouraging improvisation and playing together often is how students become sympathetic, creative musicians.
