Personal Description:

Myrddin is an award-winning Brass player and multi-instrumentalist, with a BA(hons) in Music from St Hilda’s College, Oxford, who is currently studying for an MMus in French Horn with David Pyatt, Nicolas Fleury and Roger Montgomery at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Myrddin joined the Junior Guildhall department during his sixth form, having switched from the tenor horn on which he had played in the National Youth Brass Band. After discovering a budding interest in the academic side of music, he pursued studies at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford, gaining a first class degree and studying the horn with Hugh Seenan. He is now a postgraduate on the Guildhall School of Music's Orchestral Artistry Programme, in association with the London Symphony Orchestra.

In terms of performance, Myrddin has performed as a soloist, ensemble musician and orchestral player across several genres — ranging from premiering new works for horn and piano from notable Oxford composers to collaborations with contemporary artists such as Olly Ralfe of “the Ralfe Band”.

Solo highlights have included performances of Strauss and Mozart concerti with orchestras including the Oxford Philharmonic, Saint Peter’s Chamber Orchestra and Oxford University Philharmonia, as well as performing Tristan Murail’s ‘Memoire/Erosion’ for the composer with “Ensemble ISIS”. Orchestrally he has performed with the St. Endellion Festival Orchestra, all of the Oxford University Orchestras, and the Amadeus Academy, amongst several other orchestras and chamber groups.

Internationally, Myrddin has most notably performed as part of the “Jovem Orquestra Portugesa”, touring Mahler’s composing huts with the “Orchestra for the Earth”, and “szene12”’s productions of La Boheme and Don Giovanni in Dresden, which were staged in a derelict ex-Soviet paper factory.

Away from the horn, Myrddin spent two years as conductor of the Oxford University Brass Band, winning the ‘best student conductor prize’ in the shield division of the 2017 “Unibrass” Contest. In his free time Myrddin enjoys running, is an avid Welsh rugby fan, and carries out research into Ludomusicology — the music of video games.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught many students, both privately and as part of structured and organised education. I was appointed the Resident Brass Tutor for 2017-2018 for the City of Oxford Silver Band, which offered weekly lessons for students of all ages and standards. I taught a roster of roughly 20 students through this service for a year, until I sadly stopped working working there in order to pursue my postgraduate studies in London. I have taught several students privately throughout my studies as well,
with a 100% satisfaction rate.

I have a current DBS Check.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a relaxed, confident and supportive approach to music teaching, and work with my students to help them enjoy and appreciate the value of music, alongside supporting their technical progression. Expression requires technique, and I make sure that both are covered thoroughly with all of my pupils.

I work with both ABRSM and Trinity exams, though tend to end up working with the Trinity syllabus more regularly. To date I've never had a student fail an exam, and aim to make sure somebody is entered for an exam only if genuinely ready.

Of course, I don't work towards exams with everybody, as some students just want to learn for fun without pressure - this is absolutely fine! Trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium, Trombone, Bass Trombone and all other brass instruments are easy to pick up with dedicated practice and I strongly believe that with the right amount of effort, anybody can enjoy and succeed in learning an instrument.
