Personal Description:

Classicfm music teacher of the year 2013 seeking pupils after a decade of mostly performing.
BA(hons) music studies (Leeds college of music)

I teach classical, jazz, folk; including theory and improvisation. I play violin, viola, mandolin, tenor banjo
Looking for enthusiastic pupils approximately grade 3 onwards as I teach many beginners in my other job (professional juggler).

I decided that music was the career for me at 17, so throughout the end of school and university, I was always playing catch up. Thanks to several wonderful teachers and colleagues, showing me the art form, as well as the trade… I just about made it.

At 25 I decided to learn to improvise, a daunting task for any classical 'blob reader', but one of the best decisions I ever made! I turned me from someone who could play music, into a musician.

Tutoring Experience:

Private music tutor for 15 years
Conducted an amateur orchestra for 8 years
Had many students pass ABRSM (exams grade 1 to 8 and grade 5 theory)
peripatetic school teacher 3 years
probably taught 10 000 people how to juggle now in schools and community events throughout the UK
Invited to teach and perform juggling in the USA and throughout Europe!

Tutoring Approach:

I think the struggle I had to get good, fast, helped me to develop strategies for teaching such a difficult subject, on a difficult instrument.
I am very keen on developing musicality so the pupil can effectively teach themselves, and be independent in the various musical situations they might encounter.
I tailor the tuition to the pupils requests, keeping it informal and relaxed, but I don't ignore the challenges the pupil has to overcome to improve
I vary the structure and content of lessons to keep them interesting
having played in many different types of ensembles I also advice on what its like to be a working musician
I separate the trade from the art form, and also playing music into practice and play, sometimes you've just got to let rip!
If we both have the time and energy, lessons often carry on beyond what you paid for.
