Personal Description:
I am a freelance musician and have been committed to music full-time - particularly in the jazz idiom - for the past fourteen years. Primarily a tenor saxophonist, I double on baritone, alto and soprano saxophone, Bb and bass clarinet, and flute. I attended Royal Birmingham Conservatoire reading post-graduate diploma in Jazz Performance where I also studied Music Pedagogy.
Tutoring Experience:
I have had the fantastic opportunity to work with: Services For Education - Music Service; Northumberland Music Hub; Royal Birmingham Junior Conservatoire; and Durham University. Within these roles, I have accrued ten years of teaching in a range of environments focussing on saxophone, clarinet, flute, composition, theory and piano. These include: absolute beginner to post-diploma (classical and jazz equivalent); individual, small group, whole class instrumental lessons; ages 6-21; in secular and various faith establishments. This wide variety of situations has taught me the importance of holistic tuition tailored to each individual and a need for a thorough knowledge of music that can be explained via several approaches.
Tutoring Approach:
Every pupil is unique with their own strengths and weaknesses. The wide variety of teaching situations has taught me the importance of holistic tuition tailored to each individual and a need for a thorough knowledge of music that can be explained via several approaches. In the end, music is to be played so I like to keep all my lessons enjoyable at every level of your musical journey.

Matthew is also incredibly knowledgeable about the sax. and has really good ability to explain exactly how to correct the many many things I am still doing wrong. After just 4 lessons I feel I am finally beginning to get to grips with this complicated but beautiful instrument, and am looking forward to many more tuition sessions from Matthew.
I would highly recommend Matthew as a tutor!!
