Matthew began studying the cello aged 8 in Wiltshire before moving to Hull in 2008. He graduated from Hull university in July 2011 with a Bachelor’s in music focussing in Solo and Ensemble performance before going on to study at Master’s level. He has participated in solo Masterclasses with George Keneway from Opera North and former BBC young musician of the year Natalie Clein, as well as quartet Masterclasses with the Ferdinand David Quartet and Steve Wilkie from the Royal Northern College of Music.
An experienced solo and ensemble player, Matthew plays as part of a Hull based string quartet as well as an early music trio with Professor Christopher Wilson. He is also an accomplished continuo player and proficient on the baroque cello. As a conductor, Matthew has directed both orchestras and choirs and has been involved with Masterclasses with Ronald Corp and Adrian Brown.
Matthew is now based in south Yorkshire where he balances work as a freelance cellist, cello teacher and conductor.
