Information About Matt - Aldershot teacher
Matt had been playing drums since a very young age before getting live experience with his bass guitar playing dad in folk rock and classic rock gigs. During his school years he also played in original and rock groups where he was given the freedom to apply his own unique style and make a name for himself locally.
He then went on to Music college where he was exposed to other styles of music from legendary tutors, opening his eyes to the world of Latin, Jazz, Funk and other musical explorations which he devoured and studied.
Having played with countless groups, solo artists, theatre engagements, radio jingles, metal/rock bands, jazz ensembles and function bands, Matt settled with funk/soul/rock band Helium Soul who achieved great acclaim from their debut album, Mass of Four. This achieved airplay world wide and extensively on BBC RADIO 2 and BBC RADIO 6. Since parting with Helium Soul Matt has continued working with many other bands as well as many recording sessions in an array of genres.
As an experienced drummer, percussionist, keyboard player, composer and teacher, Matt’s playing is one of the most important aspects of his life and something that he is totally dedicated to. Over the years he has played in many different settings with numerous recording sessions and constant “depping” gigs enabling him to walk into most drumming situations confident that he can do the job. A strong reader and comfortable with a click, huge emphasis is put on precision timing and a great natural feel. As well as continuous depping, he plays in a newly formed jazz group combining standard jazz tunes with modern fusion compositions, a function band, a Santana tribute band **Web Address Removed**, Italian classical cellist Stefano Matteuci, a Russian Britpop band, a blues/Rock band and continues to play regular sessions. He is always looking for new playing collaborations.
This has included work all over the world from village halls, pubs, clubs, universities, arena’s, festivals, theatres (including London Palladium, Her Majesty’s Theatre and Theatre Royal-Drury lane), boats and countless recording sessions.
He also successfully wrote, recorded and produced a drum loop sample album and subsequently sold the copyright to Loopasonic TM (The Sonica Group) and appeared in the 2008 SONY WALKMAN advert.
Matt has been published in many magazines across the world including Modern Drummer, Drum Head, International Musician, Drumscene, Music Teacher and Making Music, as well as many non-musical publications.
He is currently writing a comprehensive history of the drum which will be published in 2011 by an American publisher.
He has also written many short stories, radio dramas, a novel and a sitcom as a result of his writing passion.
Matt has been teaching since 1997. In this time he has developed a unique and highly effective syllabus which helps to get the best from each individual student. He can help the student through the entire grade examination process; develop particular skills for professional situations such as the recording studio or a sight reading gig; or just simply help people attain a greater technical and intellectual level of drumming and music in general, allowing them to meet their own personal goals. In all cases, the underlying intention is to create a musician who can get out there and play with other musicians rather than just a technical wizard who is confined to their practice room with an inability to connect with other people. The most relevant approach is always tailored to each individual student’s needs.
He works privately at his well equipped home studio in Farnham, Surrey. In this comfortable, spacious area the students have access to acoustic and electronic drums, Latin percussion, world percussion and recording capabilities which enables the student to create their own tracks as if playing a session in a recording studio!
He has also worked in many schools on a one-to-one basis as well as groups, taught whole school assemblies and given talks, group summer workshops, worked with mentally handicapped children and with students who have behavioural or emotional difficulties.
He is a member of the Musician’s Union, has undergone teacher training and has an enhanced CRB check. He currently teaches at Greenfield School in Woking, Surrey, and Grafham Grange in Grafham, Surrey.
As part of his work to help less fortunate children he has raised £750 for the Children with Leukaemia charity through the London Marathon, over £2,800 for child cancer charity CLICsargent and £600 for Chase Children’s Hospice through a parachute jump.
Lessons are always indivdually tailored to each student and can be drawn from an extensive syllabus that Matt has created over the years that he's been teaching, the drum grade syllabus of either Guildhall or Rockschool, or created specifically to suit a students own goals or desires focuisng on the most relevant aspects.
