Personal Description:

I have been playing Electric Bass across the U.K. and internationally for 11 years, covering the genres Rock, Pop, Funk, Jazz, Fusion, Latin and Ska. Originally self taught for 6 years, I received formal training from 2014 - 2017 during my studies at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, U.K, and Ramapo College of New Jersey by world class bassists Tiago Coimbra and Tony Cimorosi, respectively. So far, my career highlights include numerous performances with Jazz Funk group, Mode9, such as the Cheltenham Jazz Festival in 2017, selling out the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, London in 2018 and touring around Jiangsu, China in 2018 as part of the Nanjing Jazz Festival, performing 13 dates over 2 weeks. I also feature on the album 'Only Two Things Are Infinite' by Jazz Fusion guitarist, Chanan Hanspal, released in 2018, alongside Jazz legends Bill Evans and Mike Stern.

I also play Double Bass and received lessons with Pete Hill, Tony Cimorosi and Daphna Sadeh-Neu and now mostly focus on playing Jazz, Latin and Folk music.

I was also classically trained on the Piano from 2009 - 2014 in Felixstowe by Chandra Grover, then until early 2015 by Phillip Mead in Cambridge. Nowadays, I transfer my Piano skills to teaching, composing and playing Bass Synth, although I did perform on Keyboards for 6 months with Cambridge act, The Sound Of Pop Art, back in 2015 and feature on their album 'Drama', released in 2016.

Tutoring Experience:

"We just love Matt - he is so kind and patient. He has been really great at teaching my 13 year old son bass guitar. He is always punctual, organised and very personable. He is most encouraging and provides us with a wonderful service. I definitely recommend him!" - Jackie, parent of current student.

"I’ve been learning piano & music theory with Matt since the beginning of November. He is an intelligent, calm, knowledgeable, genuine and patient teacher who is thorough in his direction. In the short time I have been learning piano my wife has been astounded at how quickly I have picked things up. I would highly recommend him to any potential student wanting to learn the piano, bass guitar and/or music theory." - Izzy, current student.

"Really enjoying learning new styles and skills and putting right all my bad habits from 40 years of playing bass without lessons. Its a very enjoyable experience, one I look forward to through the week." - David, current student

“Matt’s music sessions has been highly educational and at the same time very fun for our child. We found Matt a very talented musician who has wonderful passion for playing and teaching. He invests time and energy for the lessons and tailors them to meet child’s needs and specific goals.” - Hamid & Naz, parents of current student.

“Matt combines an underlying rigour in his teaching both in skills and theory with a fun and supportive environment. This blend provides good motivation as well as an example with his own knowledge and experience.” - John, parent of current student.

“I've been working with Matt as a bass teacher for a few months now and even seen him perform, I can say that he knows the subject very well and can relay the information about the subject in an effective manner. Matt has a vast knowledge of all music and will accommodate anyone's taste in music or bands and help to relate that to the subject as a whole.” - Alex, current student.

I started teaching teenagers, one to one, while studying my Music degree at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge in 2015 and have since progressed to be able to teach a variety of age groups, from infant to mature. Currently, I can cover lessons on Electric Bass, Piano and Music Theory.

Tutoring Approach:

After an introductory lesson where I meet and discuss with the students what they want to achieve over the term, I conduct a termly lesson plan that is based on achieving these goals. I also aim to keep in good communication with the students and parents outside of lessons, to ensure that they are regularly updated with their weekly progress and any homework set.

My lessons on the Electric Bass can cover beginners to advanced levels and include learning repertoire of multiple genres, playing techniques, recording, reading bass notation and chord charts, ear training and other musicianship skills and working students up to a professional standard to help them on their way to having a career in music.

My lessons on the Piano cover beginners to an intermediate level, covering Classical and Pop repertoire, scales and other technical exercises, ear training, playing styles and reading notation.

My Music Theory lessons can cover beginners to advanced levels, including subjects such as Jazz harmony, composition and songwriting.
