Personal Description:

I have been playing Electric Bass across the U.K. and internationally for 13 years, covering the genres Rock, Pop, Funk, Jazz, Fusion and World and feature on several albums and studio recordings. My current work comprises of performing with the Rock band 'Sweet Crisis', Soul singer 'Ollie Lepage Dean', Jazz Fusion guitarist 'Chanan Hanspal' and wedding bands 'Bespoke Party Bands', 'Blue Lion' and 'Swagger'.

-'Home Sweet Home' by Lepage Dean (2019). Available to stream on all online platforms.

-'Tricks On My Mind' by Sweet Crisis. Available to stream and purchase everywhere from August 20th 2021.

Originally self taught for 6 years, I received formal training from 2014 - 2017 during my studies at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, U.K, and Ramapo College of New Jersey by world class bassists Tiago Coimbra and Tony Cimorosi, respectively.

So far, my career highlights include numerous festival dates and tours with Ollie Lepage Dean and Sweet Crisis, such as the Cheltenham Jazz Festival (2017), Nanjing Jazz Festival (2018, performing 13 dates over 2 weeks) and Ramblin' Man Festival (2019). I also feature on the album 'Only Two Things Are Infinite' by Chanan Hanspal (2018), alongside Jazz legends Bill Evans and Mike Stern.

I also play Double Bass and received lessons with Pete Hill, Tony Cimorosi and Daphna Sadeh-Neu and now mostly focus on playing Jazz, Latin and Folk music.

I was also classically trained on the Piano from 2009 - 2014 in Felixstowe by Chandra Grover, then until early 2015 by Phillip Mead in Cambridge. Nowadays I transfer my Piano skills to teaching and composing, although I did play Keyboards with Cambridge act, The Sound Of Pop Art, for 6 months in 2015 and feature on their album 'Drama', released in 2016.

Tutoring Experience:

"In the time he worked with my son, Matt was punctual, reliable and organised. He was very good at communicating with us about activities completed in the lessons and practice he had set. It was evident from this communication that Matt has a very conscientious attitude towards his students and gives thought to supporting their progress. In turn, he was mindful of how we could support these lessons as parents. Matt was always professional, friendly and patient. He took a positive approach at all times and my son was always happy to attend his lessons. In addition, Matt is generous in sharing his own musical interests to foster enthusiasm in his pupils. This gave a wider context to learning music which we appreciated." - Laura, parent.

"Inspirational teacher, accommodating with the genres covered, will transcribe your favourite music so you can learn to play it. Very supportive, patient and understanding, easy to get along with and at the same challenging.Taken on a challenge with me as I am a novice to playing an instrument. Never too late to learn with Matt." - Bob, student.

"My children say that Matt explains things really clearly. He is very encouraging and makes the lessons interesting and varied. He challenges but is also really supportive. We highly recommend him." - Kate, parent.

"Matt has a perfect blend of solid knowledge of theory whilst being able to apply it to the bass and make music. He also has impeccable teaching skills to help students of any skill level reach their goals." - Andrew, student.

"We just love Matt - he is so kind and patient. He has been really great at teaching my 13 year old son bass guitar. He is always punctual, organised and very personable. He is most encouraging and provides us with a wonderful service. I definitely recommend him!" - Jackie, parent.

"I’ve been learning piano & music theory with Matt since the beginning of November. He is an intelligent, calm, knowledgeable, genuine and patient teacher who is thorough in his direction. In the short time I have been learning piano my wife has been astounded at how quickly I have picked things up. I would highly recommend him to any potential student wanting to learn the piano, bass guitar and/or music theory." - Izzy, student.

"Really enjoying learning new styles and skills and putting right all my bad habits from 40 years of playing bass without lessons. Its a very enjoyable experience, one I look forward to through the week." - David, student

“Matt’s music sessions has been highly educational and at the same time very fun for our child. We found Matt a very talented musician who has wonderful passion for playing and teaching. He invests time and energy for the lessons and tailors them to meet child’s needs and specific goals.” - Hamid & Naz, parents.

“Matt combines an underlying rigour in his teaching both in skills and theory with a fun and supportive environment. This blend provides good motivation as well as an example with his own knowledge and experience.” - John, parent.

“I've been working with Matt as a bass teacher for a few months now and even seen him perform, I can say that he knows the subject very well and can relay the information about the subject in an effective manner. Matt has a vast knowledge of all music and will accommodate anyone's taste in music or bands and help to relate that to the subject as a whole.” - Alex, student.

Tutoring Approach:

I pride myself in being a great listener who caters for each student's needs individually, whether the lessons are for fun, grades or profession. I can set out termly plans to achieve goals but also enjoy the spontaneity of covering whatever the student wants to learn in each lesson. I advocate curiosity and self-discovery and I like to help students find out what sparks their interest and creativity.

I started teaching university students, one to one, while studying at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge in 2015 and have since progressed to be able to teach a variety of age groups, from infant to mature. I have also taught students with ADHD and dyslexia.

My lessons on the Electric Bass cover beginner to advanced levels in playing techniques, fretboard navigation, time keeping, genre studies (Jazz, Funk, Rock, Blues, World) and reading bass notation and chord charts.

My lessons on the Piano cover beginner to intermediate levels in Classical, Pop, T.V/ Film and video game repertoire, keyboard navigation and reading notation.

My Music Theory lessons cover beginner to advanced levels in melody, harmony and rhythm analysis, notation, transposition and composition. I typically use the ABRSM books to teach but also provide practical exercises when needed.

I offer a variety of locations to have our lessons; either at my house in North Cambridge, at your house depending on locality (10 mile radius), online or at Rhinocorn Studio at an additional cost of £10 per hour. I suggest a discussion prior to our first lesson to decide on the best location based on your circumstances.
