This is how 3 referees rated Martha-Lilly:
I am a flautist currently studying for an Undergraduate degree in flute performance at the Royal College of Music London. My previous places of study include the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (2018-2021) where I was awarded a Diploma of Higher Education and Wells Cathedral School (2012-2017) where I was awarded the ABRSM diploma in flute performance with Distinction. My love for performing has seen me play in a number of Orchestral, Chamber and Solo settings across the UK, including the Garrick Club in London, Cedars Hall in Wells, and the Dora Stoutzker Hall in Cardiff. My numerous and ongoing experiences within music education only further motivate me to keep being an inspiring teacher and coach, and I love being able to share my passion for music with others.
I have taught flute, coached ensembles and delivered theory and aural sessions for students across all ages and abilities. From Dec 2020 to July 2022 I worked as a Graduate Musician at Wells Cathedral School where I taught flute for students aged 11-18. Whilst at Wells I also coached a junior Wind Dectet weekly, and a regularly took sessions with the school flute ensemble. Alongside this I worked with younger children (aged 3-10) in a workshop capacity, delivering classes on rhythm, melody and listening skills. I also provided aural and theory content to students of all ages and grades in the lead up to Trinity and ABRSM exams. Whilst studying at the Royal Welsh I also taught fellow students, as beginner adults, to play.
My aim is to be able to share my love of music and flute with my students. I love it when my students leave their lessons with a smile on their faces, wanting ti come back next week to play some more. I've been really lucky with my musical education and I view it as a privilege to be able to share my knowledge with my students, hopefully inspiring them to be better players themselves.
I believe in teaching the fundamental technique to be essential, especially when beginning the flute, and learning how flute and music in general can positively impact my students life. I will always include general musicianship skills, including aural and theory, in my lessons to reinforce how music relates to what has been learnt on the flute. By encouraging a positive, fun yet focused approach in lessons I often see quick and successful progress with my students making a happy environment for both my students and me as the teacher. I am very good knowledge of the well known music exam boards and the requirements and very happy to pursue the 'Grades' pathway for those who wish to.
As a classical flautist, I mostly teach to a high standard of classical playing, however I do have fundamental skills in Jazz, and am always very happy to explore any new genres my students wish to bring to lessons.
