Personal Description:

I came to Scotland from Sao Paulo, Brazil where I played and taught with my young family for studies in 1996 and quickly became involved in the jazz scene.
I graduated in Brazil UNICAMP 1990 (Composition/Double Bass) and completed my Masters Degree 1999 (Napier University).
On arrival in Scotland I toured wit Tommy Smith Sextet ' Beasts of Scotland' and became bassist of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra for 8 years.
I recorded and performed with several seminal groups of the burgeoning Scottish Jazz scene amongst them: ‘John Rae’s Celtic Feet’, Ryan Quigley Sextet, Martin Kershaw Quartet, Paul Harrison Trio, John Burgess Quartet, Brian Molley Quartet,
Stu Brown Twisted Toons, New Focus, Playtime Collective, Kevin Mackenzie Trio and many others as well as cross over groups suchs as Moishes Bagel, Nuala Kennedy, Tangalgo, Phil Bancroft’s ’Home Small as the World’and Salsa Céltica.
I also played with visiting American and European top players such as: Julian Arguelles, David Berkman, George Collligan, Ghuss Jansen, Tim Garland, Ary Hoenig, Leo Blanco and Nguyen Lê.

Alongside my activities as a side man I released my debut album “Bacuris” featuring some of the best musicians in Scotland and received excellent reviews.
My current CD “Hands On” features special guest David Berkman on piano, Martin Kershawon sax, Kevin Mackenzie on guitar and Tom Gordon on drums.
Since its launch ’Hands On’ and has been achieving accolades amongst them a Scottish New Music Awards nomination for best jazz abum of the year 2012.
I also play and teach Brazilian Bossa Nova guitar with which I began my musical journey.

Tutoring Experience:

I taught bass guitar and double bass at Strathclyde University, Perth College, Stevenson College, Jewel & Esk Valley College and currently teach as part of the Jazz Department Faculty at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where I teach not only Double Bass and Bass Guitar but also Original Jazz Composition, Latin Ensemble, Arrangement and Ear Training.I have now helped to form a generation of new players coming to prominence in the UK and American jazz scene such as Aidan O’Donnel, Calum Gourlay, Ross Hamilton, John Allan and Kevin Glasgow, Brodie Jarvie, David Bowden, Mandy Clarke, Jodie Bremaneson and several others.

Tutoring Approach:

Having started with Brazilian Popular music I turned my interest to Jazz and subsequently went to classically orientated University. That gave me a breadth of experiences that allowed me to cross genres and appreciate the points of convergence as well as recognise the pit falls of traditional teaching. My approach is firmly based in theoretical harmonic, melodic and rhythmic knowledge expanded by my activities as a composer and improviser.
Because of my background I can offer genuine authentic Latin music tuition based in years of experience playing not just Brazilian but also Afro Caribbean styles.
