Personal Description:

I am a writer, theatre maker and musical performer living and working in Bristol.

While writing is my main vocation, music has been an anchor for me throughout my life and I have 15 years’ experience performing the violin, both with bands and in professional theatre contexts. I have performed at venues and festivals across the UK including Bristol Old Vic, Arcola Theatre, Latitude Festival, Wilderness Festival and Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in the Square.

I consider teaching to be a privilege and find it most rewarding when I am able to inspire people to feel as excited by their instrument as I am. Learning the violin is a journey requiring dedication and patience - I see it as my job to support students on that journey by equipping them with good practice methodology and technique improvement, but above all by nurturing a desire to want to practice in the first place.

As a musician I was classically trained, completing graded examinations up to Grade 8 for Violin and Grade 7 for Piano. As a performer, I have played with folk bands and rock bands and so have developed a flexible approach to the instrument. At the moment I play five string electric violin with a progressive rock band called Jakabol.

I can host lessons here at my home and am also happy to teach via Skype or Zoom.

Tutoring Experience:

For violin I have typically taught one-to-one priva**Contact Detail Removed**ssons.
As a writer I have also taught groups of up to 20 people in a workshop capacity.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor my teaching approach to the student. I like to respond to people's existing musical interests while also suggesting other avenues. It’s important to me to find the right level of challenge so that lessons and practice feel new and exciting, but students can also observe the progress they are making.

As a classically trained violinist I am happy to teach this style using graded examinations as markers of progress. However, I am also really enjoy teaching other styles of playing including folk, gypsy, klezmer, electric, and improvisation - or a combination of these.
