This is how 2 referees rated Marianna:
An experienced, effective and highly qualified singing teacher and vocal pedagogue, I have over twelve years of experience in teaching both in a one on one as well as in a group setting, in higher and middle education, and have a proven record of repeated success with students, both beginners and advanced students.
Students of mine have had repeated successes with ABRSM and Trinity Music Grade Exams, often times achieving Distinction, and have been admitted in the music departments of Universities and Conservatories across the UK and Europe including, Glasgow University, the Royal Holloway, the University of Surrey, the University of Aberdeen, the Edinburgh Napier University, the Hague Conservatory, Vienna Conservatory and the University of Arts in Vienna to name a few.
A number of them have also gone on to appear professionally with symphony orchestras and opera companies. Most recently a student of mine at Bird College was accepted at the BBC Proms Youth Choir and another student of mine progressed to the final rounds of the Belvedere International Competition.
A Summa Cum Laude (First Class Honours Graduate) of Mercyhurst University, the prestigious Rice University and The Ohio State University I hold a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance, a Master of Music in Voice Performance and a Master of Arts in Vocal Pedagogy. I completed my education with a number of Merit Scholarships including a full two year scholarship for my degree in Vocal Pedagogy.
An experienced, active and versatile performer, I have appeared with a number of opera companies and symphony orchestras across Europe and the USA including Erie Philharmonic, the Rice University Symphony Orchestra, the Cyprus Opera Organization, the Paphos Aphrodite Festival, Kazakh Abai National Theatre, Opera Columbus, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra among others. In concert, I have collaborated with world class musicians such as Hans Graf, James Gaffigan, Levi Hammer and Cristian Macelaru. Past performing highlights include the performances of the roles of Mimi, Dorabella, Mrs. Jessel, Countess Almaviva, and Donna Anna and the performance of 'Pierrot Lunaire' as Sprechstimmer. In December 2015 I appeared with the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra as a soloist in a concert dedicated to the life and work of Tchaikovsky singing ‘Tatiana’s Letter Scene and in November 2016 I appeared as a soloist with the Chimera Orchestra in London where I premiered the work ‘Fallen’ by British composer Louis Ramm, among other pieces. As a recitalist I have sung in numerous solo thematic recitals and have premièred a number of works of contemporary composers.
I have served as a Voice Teacher at the Preparatory Programme of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Classical Voice at The Ohio State University, an Adjunct Professor of Classical Voice at the University of Nicosia and most recently as a Voice Teacher at the Music School of Nicosia where I developed a true interest in the developing adolescent voice. Currently, I am serving as a Singing Tutor at the Bird College Music Services where in addition to one-on-one singing lessons I have also, in the recent past, covered as the conductor for the Junior, Youth and Bexley Adult choirs. I am also serving as a singing teacher at Kingsmead School, St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive School and Cumnor House School.
Recognised for my achievements in vocal teaching, in 2013 I was ranked first in the category of voice teachers by the Ministry of Education and Culture in a national search for music tutors employed by the Music Schools of Cyprus.
I enjoy teaching in a relaxed and straight forward way whilst trying always to establish good technical methods combining elements of the Bel Canto school of singing along with modern vocal pedagogy practices. I try to build voices carefully and slowly, particularly when dealing with young singers, combining all three of the fundamental elements of the voice: breathing, phonation and resonance. Most importantly, however, I like to make the lessons interactive and fun and install the love of singing in every student I come across regardless of their natural ability. I have experience teaching young professional, adolescents and children.
