Personal Description:
I am a jazz pianist based here in London. I graduated from King's College London two years ago with a Bachelor's of Music, and in September 2023 will be attending Guildhall for a masters in performance (Jazz Piano). I was born in the USA, raised in Northern Ireland, and five years ago came to London to study!
I am obsessed with Jazz and Classical music, but also enjoy more other kinds of music such as contemporary and Irish trad music.
During my degree at King's College London I studied jazz piano and classical flute at the Royal Academy of Music. For my final year recital I was awarded first class marks. In this recital I played a selection of music by Gil Evans, Billy Strayhorn, and Herbie Hancock.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching privately and in schools for over 4 years. I teach students of all ages and abilities, on both the flute and piano.
I have been part of multiple programmes in which I teach groups of primary school children the fundamentals of music. The first of these was as part of a programme through my university. The second of these was DaCapo music foundation, with whom I am still currently employed and teaching. These experiences have helped me develop strong teaching skills when teaching young children, often found to be one of the most challenging demographics to teach. I also teach adults throughout London privately.
Tutoring Approach:
To enrich my lessons, I draw upon my knowledge of Kodaly teaching techniques, my knowledge of the Alexander Technique, and my love of music!
I have particular experience in teaching students as young as 6 using Kodaly music techniques. These techniques allow me to convey coplex musical concepts to children easily, quickly, and in a manner than doesn't bore the child. These techniques also help me teach adults!
I believe strongly in creating a love of music in the pupil. I strive for all of my students to love their playing, love the process of learning, and enjoy performing for others. If a student doesn't want to sit and play their instrument, they by no means should. Having a love for creating music will be the best thing for any student's playing.
