Information About Louis - Newcastle teacher
Banjo (4 string)
I teach folk and traditional music on a range of fretted instruments including guitar, tenor banjo, tenor guitar and Irish bouzouki. Irish traditional music a specialty, other styles include bluegrass and old-time music. Lessons would also be appropriate for a beginner learner on mandolin or mandola. Irish Bodhran drum lessons also available.
I have taught private pupils and led group workshops in traditional music. I have studied traditional music for four years at Newcastle University where I have had the chance to work with a great many highly respected tutors. This has given me great insight into giving effective one to one instrumental tuition.
The traditional music that I specialise in is a vernacular oral tradition and therefore I tend to avoid using notation to teach. My general approach is to teach by ear and then provide notation for reference as an aid to memory if a pupil feels they would benefit from it. This is the way I learnt traditional music, the way it has been taught for generations and I feel it is the most effective way to get involved in a living musical tradition.
