Personal Description:

I am a Cambridge educated musician with a passion for passing on the knowledge that my teachers gave to me. Music is great for young people, and a career in music can be rewarding and exciting for those willing to embark upon it. I am here to help those who are interested! Tutoring is tailored to the individual. I teach piano to all levels, and can include improvisation and singing if the student is interested in this. I don't overload pupils with theory, but give them enough so that they know what they're doing. My lessons are fun and engaging and my enthusiasm for music soon spreads to my students!

Tutoring Experience:

I have seven years teaching experience with children and adults, beginning with the choristers at Gloucester Cathedral where I held the organ scholarship. I am director of music at Kensington United Reformed church, where I run a small music club after the Sunday service, and base my private teaching here.

Tutoring Approach:

I encourage all my pupils to develop their ability to learn and seek answers for themselves, continually adding to their own 'tree of knowledge' as they progress, and integrating each new concept into the bigger picture. This way, the information acquired becomes more useful over time rather than forgotten as we move onto the next topic.
I encourage my pupils to have a laugh and to shine the light of scepticism on every myth.
I equip my pupils with an extensive knowledge of harmony; all the chords and voicings required to enable their own exploration of jazz to baroque and classical, and everything in between, as well as a confident and assured understanding of their course materials.
I am a qualified pianist and am happy to provide accompaniment for exams and performances, the rapport built between the pupil and I lending a supportive atmosphere, especially useful in exam conditions.
