Personal Description:

Born and raised in Leeds, I began studying piano over 13 years ago and recently completed my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Leeds College of Music, specialising in composition. I play piano and organ at Stainbeck United Reformed Church in Meanwood, and have competed in numerous instrumentalist competitions in the UK. I offer lessons in piano, music theory and composition.

Tutoring Experience:

I have had over five years of experience in music education, catering to beginner, intermediate and advanced pianists, including those who are working towards exams, and those learning at leisure. I deliver the Introduction to Piano courses at Leeds College of Music (LCoM) and recently launched the Develop Your Piano Skills workshop, which addresses the technical, psychological and contextual aspects of learning music in a friendly and open environment.

I also teach for Bradford-based company Learn to Rock, which includes classroom workshops and one-to-one piano lessons for primary school children. I work regularly with Leeds International Piano Competition to deliver community-based workshops and lessons in the city centre. In recent years I have acted as musical director for the Stainbeck Players annual pantomime, which involved teaching all of the songs to a cast of adults and children.

I also teach piano and music theory classes for Junior LCoM, and previously worked as a supply teacher for the composition classes. In 2017 I mentored for a composition and performance project at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

I also work as an independent piano teacher offering lessons at my home, and at pupils' homes.

I receive regular teacher training from EPTA (European Piano Teachers Association).

Tutoring Approach:

Having been a short course tutor at Leeds College of Music, I now generate my own teaching material for one-to-one lessons. Due to my current teaching schedule, I am available to deliver lessons at my home.

For children, I often use John W. Schaum's piano course, in combination with material from Lina Ng (particularly for the younger ones). For adults, I usually generate my own material and sample work from Nancy Faber and Michael Aaron. I endorse Hanon's piano exercises, and embed music theory in every piano lesson, for all ages.

I usually teach the ABRSM piano syllabus when entering my students for exams, but I am happy to use alternative exam boards at the student's request.
