This is how 2 referees rated Layla:
My name is Layla and I'm an experienced professional female guitarist and guitar tutor. My main instruments are electric and acoustic guitar but I can also play and teach the classical guitar up to a certain standard. I graduated from the highly respected BMus (Hons) Jazz, Popular and Commercial Music degree which is based at the Sage Gateshead and have been teaching and also playing in different function bands ever since.
I love all types of music and have been part of different ensembles and projects ranging from Gipsy Jazz over Pop and Rock to Death Metal. I really enjoy teaching and believe the students should enjoy lessons, too!
I started teaching whilst doing my degree and have been teaching privately during weekdays ever since. I also tour all over the country as a gigging musician.
I've had success with both students who wanted to follow the grades (100% pass rate) and more casual learners.
I have experience teaching females who could only have same-sex teachers due to religious beliefs.
I have also absolved 6 month of voluntary work on the Accessible Learning strand at the Sage Gateshead working with people with learning difficulties.
My main approach to teaching is that it is very important to be patient and to move at the student's pace rather than my own. I think it is very important for the student to really understand what they are doing!
I always aim to incorporate knowledge of harmony and sight reading along with aural skills into songs and exercises that the student can enjoy, preferably we'll be working on songs picked by the student. I have found the grades to be a great way of obtaining an in-depth knowledge and a great foundation of the instrument and it also gives students something to work towards and a reward for their efforts. However, I also like to expand on that material and always work on songs/styles that the student particularly enjoys.
For strictly casual learners I will only include theory as far as it is really necessary because if it is your wish to just have a bit of fun playing a few songs then that's what will be the content of the lesson!
Saying that, I believe that theory can be fun too!
So all my lessons will be tailored to the individual and be structured in a way that the student can move forward without moving too fast.
From experience I have found it more beneficial for my students to come to my home as I have all gear and material ready and there tend to be more distractions at their homes. I have made exceptions where travel is impossible for the students.
Most students want 1 hour per week but I can also offer 30 mins at the price of £13 (which I find more suitable for young students).
