Personal Description:
I am a performer and tutor of oboe, flute, Cor Anglais and music theory as well as GCSE/A-Level support. I teach at home, in schools and for Wakefield Music Service.
Tutoring Experience:
Following my degree, I studied a PGCE in Secondary Music to become a qualified teacher of music and went on to work as a full time teacher of Creative Arts, where I taught mainstream classes, peripatetic lessons and extra-curricular groups alongside private tuition at home. I have been a private tutor since 2005 and have taught all ages and abilities piano, oboe, flute and theory privately, in schools, for Wakefield and Sheffield Music services, the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra and Yorchestra.
Tutoring Approach:
"They had learned in a couple of hours what I had spent months trying to teach them, by experiencing the way it should be done, as demonstrated by a master… detailed verbal instructions are rarely as effective as experience" - Gallwey, The Inner Game of Music, London 1987:146
I teach skills in overall musicianship rather than only 'ticking the boxes and passing the grades'. In my practical teaching of an instrument, I implement performance skills, dealing with performance nerves, stage presence and aural awareness. References to these skills early in musical education, which is sometimes overlooked by teachers of beginner pupils, allow tutees to develop these at a noticeably more advanced level in the future - this I have seen in huge degrees during my private and school-teaching experience.
Overall, the teaching must be tailored to what the tutees wish to gain. Some tutees do not wish to take exams on all or any of their instruments, however, outstanding progress should still be made. My style of teaching is entirely positive, encouraging and tutee-centred. I am very used to communicating with tutees and parents. I am willing to provide group lessons upon request.

I'm really enjoying my lessons and pleased with my progress and can honestly say it is all thanks to Laura and her refreshing approach to teaching that motivates me to also put the practice in!
GCSE music and theory grades.
Lovely family. Made my daughter and me feel welcome. My daughter said that Laura’s personality made each lesson enjoyable. My daughter achieved a grade 7 in her music GCSE exam and grade 5 theory exam.
