Personal Description:

I play violin in Tanzanite Manouche Gypsy Jazz Trio and have 40 years' experience of performing. I studied music at Huddersfeld University Music School, where Herbert Whone taught me violin, and I studied Piano with Eileen Bass and Voice with David Lennox of Covent Garden Opera Company. I have been headteacher in two schools and throughout my career have directed and produced concerts and musicals, including Oliver! and Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. I have taught speech production and choral singing since 1989, and entered school choirs into local music festivals and competitions.

Tutoring Experience:

I am a fully qualified and highly experienced teacher of over 30 years' experience, having taught the violin since I was a student at Huddersfield University in 1981-1984. I have also taught trainee teachers and currently teach English For Academic Purposes to overseas students preparing for Masters level courses and PhDs.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very holistic approach towards the teaching of music, since holding a musical instrument places pressure on certain muscles and can lead to unhelpful posture, which can in turn affect performance. I studied Alexander Technique in Sheffield with Mark Tolson, and I still utilise some of these techniques to free the body of 'tight spots', particularly in helping students to develop fluid bowing styles.
I am a qualified coach and I utilise a range of strategies and tools to help individuals to overcome their anxieties about performing.
