Personal Description:

Hello. My name is Kim and I am a piano teacher, accompanist and performer. I studied at the Purcell School and the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Originally, I was a freelance orchestral violinist playing with the English Chamber Orchestra, Glyndebourne Touring Opera, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and other freelance orchestras around London and the UK.
I love my work as a piano teacher/pianist/accompanist, working with choirs, eurythmists, and occasionally giving recitals and performing the odd concerto. Recently I have focused on improvisation and Jazz, something that I have dabbled in for a number of years. Due to Covid and the lockdowns, my choices of direction seem to have changed somewhat, as with many, and Improvisation and jazz have become much more important.
I love to teach and mainly my pupils are beginners to grade four to five.
I find that watching them develop as people and musicians is fascinating. I believe that teaching is not only about learning to play the correct notes and learning to play pieces, it is all about being totally at ease with oneself and others in conjunction with playing the piano. Feeling comfortable with ones chosen instrument, and being able to communicate musically and amongst others, so communicating freely is very important.
Our piano lessons are often hard work but fun also, and I love my pupils, some of them are very young and some are adults. Not everyone wants to take exams, so we find a different sense of direction for them to take, this may entail learning popular songs or some classical repertoire. The personal direction of the pupil is very important and I try to cater for everyone's needs. Some may feel that taking an exam is the way to go, so we work on scales, repertoire, sightreading, aural and some theory.
There is no age limit to learning to play the piano so I am very happy to teach adults and children as young as six/seven. Everyone is welcome.

Tutoring Experience:

2000: Self employed piano teacher: First teaching position: Gower House School, Wembley, London.
Teaching the piano privately, punctuated by freelance violin work.
Private piano teacher, teaching from home and travelling to pupil's homes.
Online piano teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that teaching the piano is not simply about learning notes, technique and repertoire, it is about the pupil as a human being and how at ease they are to communicate, as a pianist and musician.
I find that having the confidence to speak and communicate freely during the lesson and amongst others is very important, also being at ease and being aware physically of how they are feeling. Breathing. This, I find is truly a way forward with playing the piano.
We always work on technique, and I try to find the smallest steps possible to explain a small technical movement or position. Of course this can only happen when a pupil is ready, one can not push technique onto a person if they are not ready to focus. And of course, sometimes it happens completely naturally, which is wonderful.
I believe that allowing the individual development to happen naturally and at my pupil's own pace is of utmost importance. Understanding where their interests lie and being guided by them and their natural inclinations, within reason, of course. Being the teacher, I am guiding them, technically, musically, but at the pace of the pupil.
