I am an international postgraduate student in the Birmingham Conservatoire majoring in piano. The piano has been my companion for the past 19 years, with the excitement and joy I feel during my first lesson when I was six still vivid in my mind. Learning music became a pleasure in my adolescence, and after finishing my high school education I declined a scholarship in engineering to pursue my interest music. I constantly seek out new piano repertoire, in addition to composing music myself, and sought to teach students to love music as I have. My personal experience in taking UK-based examinations since I was young have helped me understand better the psychology of students who are now taking the same path.
My first teaching experience was 7 years ago in a music center where I was tutoring 4 young children from the ages of 8 to 12, in addition to a working adult who was learning casually. These children range from beginner to intermediate students up to grade 5. Besides that, I have had the opportunity to coach a grade 8 student one month before his exam as an additional tutor and he managed to score a distinction in the ABRSM examination. These experiences have enriched my knowledge in both teaching materials and methods across a range of levels.
My credo in pedagogy is centered around developing a keen interest in music, in which students are encouraged to view music as an area of play and fun, instead of a chore. This means that my students often do not see practice as practice, but a time where they can explore their relationship with the piano, and do what it really is supposed to be - to 'play' the piano. Once they have instill this foundation relationship with music, students are also encouraged to take examinations, with the agreement of parents in order to test their skills and further improve their abilities. I approach teaching holistically: technique, musicianship, aural skills, music history and theory are often covered in each lesson, but done in a rather flexible and approachable way.
