Personal Description:

As a teacher, it is important to have a rich background of performance to inspire pupils. As an instrumentalist, I specialised in Jazz Saxophone throughout my teenage years. I experienced courses in Jazz and was lead Tenor in several different Jazz Groups. I am currently a member of the Mr Swing Jazz Orchestra and the Sam Johnson Big Band based in York. I have also been the principal flautist with the UoY Concert Orchestra for four years. At University, I developed a passion for woodwind doubling. Subsequently, I have delved into the world of pit playing across Yorkshire playing in shows including Les Miserables, Annie, The Addams Family, Ghost and Sunset Boulevard for companies such as Pick Me Up Theatre, York Stage Musicals, Harrogate Operatic Players and New Earswick Musical Society. With regards to singing, I mainly focus on opera and classical singing. I have played roles such as Fiordiligi (Cosi fan Tutte) at the National Centre for Early Music, Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro) in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, Cendrillon (Massanet’s Cendrillon) at the Grand Opera House York, Pamina (The Magic Flute) at the GOH York, Cissi (Albert Herring) in the SJLCH, Josephine (HMS Pinafore) at the Buxton Opera House, 2nd Woman (Dido and Aeneas) at the National Centre for Early Music and Zorah (Ruddigore) at the BOH. I have also played musical theatre roles such as Anna (The King and I) and Glinda (Wicked). Equally in this time at University, I set up and co-directed several different ensembles including Brass Neck Saxophone Quartet and a Jazz Quartet Function Band. I am also co-director of the auditioned a cappella ensemble, Vox and I am the director for the Zamar Gospel Choir.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching Singing, Saxophone, Flute and Clarinet since I was 17 and have developed a huge passion for peripatetic teaching. I have been teaching at York Music Centre on a Saturday morning since September and have really enjoyed the experience; as a result, I am now an Approved Tutor with York Arts Education. I also work at Cundall Manor School and Fulneck School teaching Woodwind and I am a casual supply music teacher for Art Forms in Leeds. I have taught a wide range of ages from 6 to 60 from absolute beginner all the way to Grade 8 including Grade 5 Music Theory for several students. I am able to accompany my pupils to some degree and am continually developing these skills with the accompaniment lessons. I have a sound knowledge of the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall examination styles and have conducted and marked mock exams for pupils in the past. Through my work with MEG (Music Education Group) as workshops co-ordinator, I have had the opportunity of leading workshops in Primary schools, such as African Drumming, Composition and Introduction to Instruments. At University I took a keen interest in Education modules including Music in the Community module where I went on placement at Heworth Primary School as a music teacher. For my dissertation, I developed a multi-faced learning environment for Year 6 to discover all the woodwind instruments. Taking inspiration from Peter and the Wolf, I used theatre and character association as a teaching method. I have also volunteered as a Youth and Children’s worker at Busbridge Church, Godalming, in order to complete the Schools Without Walls Accreditation Scheme. As a result, I have had plenty of experience of working with children.

Tutoring Approach:

Over the last year, I have been studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Music Education:Vocal and Instrumental teaching. The course is extremely good and is already transforming the way I teach. I have developed insight into different learning and teaching styles, how to engage with different personality types, teaching techniques for singers and instrumentalists, good pedagogical practice in a multitude of circumstances, motivation, the teacher-student-parent relationship, the understanding of professional ethics and my obligations as a teacher all of which help me understand what is relevant and professional in a
range of pedagogic contexts. I am doing the course part-time over 2 years to gain additional experience at the same time. I teach enthusiastically with a whole range of materials and resources.
