Personal Description:

I teach adults and children to play the piano at home and in a school. I am also a member of an orchestra, the Curious Piano Teachers and the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

Tutoring Experience:

My first experience of teaching was twenty years ago as a young music student and I found it fascinating. Pedagogy soon became my favourite part of my studies! I have enjoyed working in other aspects of music as well but since 2016 teaching has been my sole focus.

I teach adults and children aged 4 upwards although many children learn more happily once they have settled at school. I have experience teaching one-to-one and groups, in pupils' homes and also in a school.

Tutoring Approach:

We are all born with the ability to make music and I believe that all my pupils deserve to learn to sing, play and read music. I encourage my pupils to learn and practise with humour and commitment to really make the most of their lessons.

I use very different materials with different ages but my ethos is the same. It's about what my pupils deserve.

Pupils deserve to learn thoroughly and therefore I use thorough methods for playing and reading music, young pupils do plenty of listening games and exercises and parents of children learning have to have some involvement which I am happy to discuss. I consult with other teachers regularly.

Pupils deserve to enjoy playing and therefore I will be glad to tailor repertoire for intermediate players and teach favourite tunes alongside "set" repertoire.

Pupils deserve to develop wider tastes as listeners and as musicians through playing and therefore I will introduce unknown tunes and styles.

I offer a free consultation session to prospective new pupils.

A small note on exams:

Pupils can sit exams if I can see that they are ready, they want to do it and it is a good motivator for them. Not all sit exams, but those who do get good marks and a sense of pride.
