Personal Description:

I have been playing clarinet for over thirty years and saxophone for fifteen. I really enjoy music theory too and as music teacher in a school, I have directed choirs and small orchestras. Although I do teach at home, I also travel to pupils' homes when it is more convenient.

Tutoring Experience:

I have worked as a Head of Music in a school for over ten years, and as a private tutor for fifteen years. I have taught individuals and groups aged from as young as eight to as mature as seventy one.

I am a theory specialist and have been able to help many pupils over the sticking point that is grade five theory!

I have always used the associated board for exams and have not yet had a pupil fail.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to lessons is to make them relevant to the individual, so depending on their age, I would involve them in decisions about what to teach. I try to find examples of the styles of music that they enjoy playing to use as teaching materials. I believe it is very important to play as much repertoire as possible so I do not rush from one grade to the next. This enables pupils to perfect their skills and broaden their experiences as they progress and gives them more confidence when approaching exams. I try to include as much musicianship as possible in every lesson.

Grade five theory is often deeply unpopular. I will not claim to be able to make it fun or enjoyable, however, I am able to teach it concisely and efficiently to maximise you chances of passing the exam.
