Personal Description:

I am currently a student at the University of Edinburgh studying for BSc Mathematics w/ Statistics. Though I study mathematics in university, music performance (mainly violin) has been a major part of my life. I obtained grade 8 ABRSM when I was 11 years old, and proceeded to join the Singapore National Youth Orchestra soon after. Upon moving countries to the sunny coast of California, I further expanded my musical career in several other orchestras such as the Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra, Asian American Youth Symphony, and the Japan America Chamber Ensemble. Having had concert mistress experience for three years, I had the pleasure of also coordinating gigs at weddings and event receptions. In regards to solo performance, I have received first place in the Music Teachers' Association of California solo violin baroque section. In piano performance, I obtained a grade 10 in the Certificate of Merit.
Though I am Japanese, I have lived in English-speaking countries for the majority of my life (18 years), hence English is not a problem.

Tutoring Experience:

As part of the Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra activity, I started teaching violin to children of age 7-12 since 2013. I also held private lessons for my violin mentor to aid his busy schedule.

Tutoring Approach:

Though focusing on musicality, I put great emphasis in technicality and basics. I strongly encourage students to constantly reinforce their foundations while also teaching music in a non-mechanical manner. After all, playing an instrument is all about singing your heart out - without actually using your mouth. Having had mentored in several different music technique styles (German, Russian, English, Japanese, and American), I leave flexibility in individual musical expression beyond technicality. Having had experience teaching different ages of children at different level, I strive to adapt my teaching style to each student's learning style.
