I am a British/Australian French horn player. I studied horn at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Australian National University. I have an up-to-date DBS check, and a passion for working with young people discover music.
I am not the kind of horn player that sticks their head in the back of the orchestra and never looks up. I have always loved to get involved with every type of music I can and have played jazz, rock, musicals as well as performing on period (baroque and classical) period instruments on top of my passion for orchestral horn playing.
Most of my availability for teaching is after school hours and up until around 7pm, although I do have some day time availability. Please note, I am unavailable over the summer (July-August 2017) as I am playing in Austria and India and taking a holiday. But inquiries about lessons from September are very welcome (and I'll try and fit you in for a trial lesson when I am intermittently in the UK).
I have quite a large amount of experience working as an instrumental music teacher. I have taught French horn at all levels, for over 10 years. My youngest student was 6 years old and my oldest was a retired wonderful amateur musician, and it may be rude to mention her age. I have also taught recorder, trumpet, trombone and percussion instrumental studies at a primary school level. I have also taught music theory and used to conduct and several youth concert bands.
At the moment, I am giving preference to teaching young people as that is my passion an expertise!
I have always had a passion for teaching and music and really love sharing that passion. So I think that firstly and foremostly a good horn or trumpet lesson should encourage passion for the instrument, and then give you, the student, the tools to learn how to express that passion. Sometimes that means practice and determination but that should never hinder making music, and the enjoyment of music. Each student has their own needs and desires, so if you want someone to make you practice scales for hours we can do that, but if your approach is love and fostering your technique in a less clinical way I can tailor lessons to you needs.
Lessons for beginners generally are 30 minutes, but if you would require longer I can be flexible, 45 minutes or hour long lessons are available, and we can tailor lesson times to your needs (longer lessons as your embouchure strength improves etc.), lessons can also be weekly, every second week or even every now-and-again as you need.
