Personal Description:

Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember; both teaching and performing a variety of styles such as folk rock, classical and jazz. My other passions are choral singing, French, the countryside, reading, seeing friends, travelling and my dog! Having had a few years off (just a small handful of pupils due to Covid and other pressures) I'm now looking to expand my practice again, albeit on a part-time basis.

I teach from my lovely music room in Kidlington. I am insured and DBS cleared.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching woodwind since 1997 and have gained greatly in experience during this time. I draw upon the Simultaneous Learning Method created by Paul Harris, my clarinet tutor, mentor and educator over the last 11 years who is recognised worldwide. I have taught all ages, levels and abilities - from 8 to 80!

Tutoring Approach:

Creativity, establishing a good technique and developing the all-round musician in a friendly and positive learning environment forms the backbone of my teaching, while, at the same time, I recognise that each pupil is an individual and requires lessons tailored to his/her/ needs and learning style. It is essential that pupils ensure that they can find regular, quality time to practise and thus make progress, so lessons are rewarding and worthwhile for all.

Students sit exams when/if appropriate if desired but they do not constitute the core of my teaching. My main aim is to create skilled and rounded musicians who feel comfortable in any situation - whether orchestral, solo or jazz improvisation and to be capable of independent learning. I also encourage pupils to take part in other musical activities such as choirs, wind bands, orchestras and jazz bands to enhance their musical experience and enjoyment.

Please note that lessons are not usually 1 hour in length and are charged as follows: 30 mins £20, 45 mins £30. I do not have pupils 'back to 'back' so there is plenty of time for feedback/discussion as well as the lesson time.
