Josh offers a FREE first / introductory lesson!
My name's Josh, and I'm offering Beginner and Intermediate bass guitar lessons in the Brighton & Hove area.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Professional Musicianship, graduating in 2018 with a 2:1. My focus is mainly on Rock, Prog-Rock, Hip-Hop and Pop music, but also have a keen interest in virtually all styles and genres of music, including (but not limited to!) Jazz, Heavy Metal, Funk, and Electronic music. I grew up in Devon, but moved to Brighton to branch out and experience the hopping music scene here.
I have been immersed in music my whole life, beginning with constant exposure to the music my parents and siblings would play as I was growing up; anything from Radiohead, Muse and the Chili Peppers to Steely Dan and Miles Davis (and of course The Beatles!), with all sorts in between. This soon developed into a passion for playing music, and I now have nearly 15 years of musical experience.
While bass guitar is my primary focus, which I play in several bands writing, recording and performing our own music in the Brighton area and beyond, I am also a competent guitar, piano and synth player, and as such can offer a well-rounded perspective on teaching the bass guitar and how it fits into the context of different musical styles. I also have plenty of experience playing live, as well as recording in a studio setting, and so will also be able to help you develop your skills and confidence in these areas as well.
Whether you’ve never touched an instrument before, are returning after time away from the bass, or are simply in need of a few pointers to advance your playing, please get in touch and we can arrange a free first lesson, in which we can establish where your playing is at and what you’re looking for from me.
Lessons can be taught from my home in Brighton, or alternatively I am more than happy to travel to you.
Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you!
I have some one-to-one teaching experience, and am looking to build on this and gain as much teaching experience as possible. While the majority of my musical experience is in writing, playing / performing, and recording (which I have been doing for over 10 years), teaching has always been a goal of mine and something that I am incredibly passionate about.
My aim as your tutor will be to focus on helping you discover and learn your way around the instrument in whatever way suits you, and will tailor lessons to make sure your needs as a player and musician are being met. As much lesson time as possible will be spent on practical elements (i.e. playing), whilst always ensuring that students are developing solid technique and a basic understanding of relevant theoretical concepts alongside this.
As I can play several other instruments in addition to bass guitar, another focal point of lessons will be learning how to play with and accompany other instruments (e.g. guitar, piano). To me this is an incredibly important part of learning any instrument and in my experience I feel it is something that is often overlooked in one-to-one music tuition.
