I’m a 24-year old Trinity Laban Composition Graduate, who’s just qualified as a secondary school music teacher. My musical specialisms include musical theatre, Romantic music, contemporary Classical, theory and analysis, and composition, although I have played in a wiiiiiiiiide range of different styles. Apart from being a teacher, I’m also a regular cabaret performer and accompanist, often playing and singing my own songs!
I am a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) with a PGCE from University College London (UCL) and the Institute of Education (IoE). I have taught casually for 5 years, in both individual and group settings, and have taught a wide variety of age groups.
Music should be a fun experience, and should be fun to learn. In approaching exams, I encourage my students to find enjoyment in their pieces, and to experiment with them in new, exciting ways. (For example, I remember being told to play a piece of Bach with swung quavers when I was a teenager, and it suddenly opened Bach up to me in a way I’d never experienced before!)
The other, most crucial aspect of music teaching, is listening, and I give my students lots of pieces of music to listen to and evaluate in order to develop their musical tastes and aural skills.
