Personal Description:

My main instruments are the Great Highland Bagpipes and Whistle. I also play and teach Scottish Smallpipes and Border Pipes as well as composition helping people write tunes in the Folk and Traditional style.

I started learning music from an early age coming listening to all types of music and really having connection to Folk and Traditional music through my Grandparents. My Granddad was an Accordion player and started to teach me the Accordion and Piano when I was around 7. It wasn't until about 10 I really took to music and wanted to focus my attentions on it after hearing the Bagpipes and started to learn them. I've played the Pipes for 15 years now and the Whistle for 5 years. I have played in many pipe bands over the years starting off at the City of Newcastle Pipe Band before moving on to 101 Northumbrian Regiment (204 Battery Tyneside Scottish) I then played with Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary Pipe Band for 3 years before coming back to Newcastle and taking over as Pipe Major of the City of Newcastle when I was 18 for 2 years. I have played at many competitions picking up lots of prices for playing and also played at a lot of different Tattoo's across the worlds. I am currently still involved with the pipe band being Pipe sergeant of the band taking a step back from the role as Pipe Major after starting Degree in 2013 and focusing on my music career. I have graduated from the Folk and Traditional Music Degree at Newcastle University graduating with First Class Honours from the Degree. I am the pipe/whistle player in a Folk band called Pons Aelius which is one of my main focuses touring the passed 3 years with the band and releasing our debut album in September 2017. It is in Pons where I have really found myself as a musician both better playing and teaching wise. I compose a lot of music which we play in Pons and a lot of other bands have started to play some of my music as well. I’ve always found composing tunes quite easy, it’s something that comes quite instinctively to me. I started writing tunes when I was 14 to get my mind away from hard things that were going on around me. From there, I would try and write a tune every time I picked up my practice chanter, a lot of them were terrible! I’ve got a lot of different ways of writing music the main one is with an instrument for me it’s either whistle or pipes. I sit down and get a promising idea of a hook and play around it for a while and see where it takes me, recording the process as it goes.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught Piping for around 7 years now mainly to pipe bands from many ages and stages in learning from beginner to advanced players. I have taught big group sessions of piping sometimes teaching around 15 pipers at one time in a group session. I have done a lot of 1 to 1 lessons from beginners to advanced pipers as well over the passed 7 years. I spent 6 months working for Folk Works at the Sage Gateshead teaching adults on a Tuesday night. It was at the Sage I was teaching 2 bands of mixed instruments ranging from Guitar to Tenor Horn. I was teaching these classes Folk tunes and arrangements of music and also composition techniques. I now do cover sessions for Folk Works on a Tuesday night for Flute and Whistle and also cover for Flute and Whistle classes at Phoenix Folk as well.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to suit lessons to each individual that I am having 1 to 1 sessions with. I like to prepare before hand getting as much information about what the student would like to look at in each session and how we can focus on different aspects on the lesson so the pupil can get as much out of the lesson as possible. I have a real passion of passing on everything I know about the history and how to play the instruments.
