Personal Description:

An experienced singer and vocal coach. I was classically trained as a young teen but went on to sing pop/rock/soul
Signed to Polydor records, two singles released in the UK. I have sung all over the world with pop/rock groups, soul bands, acoustic folk groups, jazz trio, big swing bands and dance orchestras. My experience of constant gigging and touring and of what that can do to the voice, brought me to an awareness of how to look after my voice and how to get the best from it. I bring my 15 years professional experience as a singer and recording artiste, together with my study of the voice and singing technique to my singers. I feel that my voice has stayed strong and connected because I have looked after it… this is what I bring to my singers. Attending regular seminars and courses designed specifically for vocal coaches and teachers has kept me updated with all developments of vocal technique and voice care.

Tutoring Experience:

I started out teaching at performing arts and theatre schools. I also ran my own workshop classes. I now teach 121 classes. Two of my singers went on to the Brits School and The London School of Contemporary Music following lessons with me. Another two went on to have full professional singing careers after working with me and I currently have a singer in The National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Some of my singers are at present working with producers, writing and recording their own material. I teach 121 classes at my home in Walthamstow.

Tutoring Approach:

My remit to my singers is to discover and develop a connected range, with power, sensitivity and dynamics. I want to help to develop and retain a singers unique quality and tone. I encourage a contemporary pop/rock/soul technique and sound, but an overblown "style over substance" technique is not employed. All aspects of singing technique, breath, projection, vowel sounds, achieving a connected range etc are introduced as lessons progress. I encourage my singers to have an open approach to singing and music… development of a singer isn't just formal technique tuition, although of course we must learn how to sing well and safely within the realm of technique. Encouraging my singers to listen to all styles and genres of music also helps with technique as well as influence, especially important to those who want to write as well as sing. My hope for my singers is that they will be able to sing anything anywhere! Deliver an emotive performance, pitch a harmony when asked… to be able to deliver all of these with confidence and ease… that is my plan for you. I will give you the skills needed to sing safely and keep that voice in top condition. You need to know how to protect that voice, keep up the stamina to cope with regular gigs and touring. My classes have been described as informative, inspirational, supportive and fun. I can't think of a nicer compliment!
