Personal Description:

I have worked as a professional musician over the last decade both as a member of a band (performing piano, guitar, banjo, mandolin and cello) and as a composer / music producer. The band toured the UK and abroad, released three albums commercially, had high-profile TV performances and extensive radio play. Since then I have composed commissioned music for BBC television, radio dramas, and theatres in London and Oxford.

Both my time spent being in a band and my composing work have given me a working knowledge of diverse musical styles, theory and modern production techniques, which I try to use when teaching pupils where they help stimulate their innate musical curiosity and intuition.

Tutoring Experience:

I currently work as a self-employed music teacher of the piano, cello, guitar, music production (Logic X) + music theory (GCSE) to pupils aged 5 - 17, both privately and at EF Academy Oxford. I enjoy guiding my students' progress with ABRSM and RSL syllabuses, seeing what motivates them to learn and demonstrating challenging techniques. I also work as a Music Production tutor at Crisis Oxford.

Tutoring Approach:

Whilst I have had classical training, obtained qualifications, and follow the syllabus when teaching ABRSM, GCSE and A-Level, I am not overly formal in terms of my approach, as my own background is in songwriting / composition / production which is more open-ended. As an entry point for practical music or music theory, for example, I tend to start with the music that the pupil actually likes to listen to or create (within reason!) and expand upon this, as it helps when attempting to tap into pupils' natural musical curiosity and intuition…
