Personal Description:
Hello, my name is João and I'm from Portugal. I began my musical studies learning the alto saxophone when I was 12 years old. Since then I've gained experience playing with various other instruments such as Piano, Guitar and Recorder and feel very comfortable teaching all of them.
I've been teaching for the last 8 years and I have experience with students from 7 to 70 years old.
My academic qualifications (BA in Music Education/M.Ed in Music Teaching) gave a deeper insight and knowledge about pedagogy and teaching strategies and a Musicology MA. My opinion is that you can't force someone to like playing music, they have to discover it themselves and my role is to provide a context and environment to make that possible.
Tutoring Experience:
Jazz Ensemble
Classical / Jazz Piano (Beginners)
Music Theory and Aural Training
Jazz/ Classical Saxophone
Classical Guitar (Beginners)
Soprano/Alto/Tenor Recorder
I have 8 years of experience and taught students ages 7 to 70.
Tutoring Approach:
I always try to tailor my lessons around the students, both their personality and musical taste, and I think that's very important factor whether I'm teaching young children, teenagers, or adults.
Besides the standard music practice that goes on in a class, I often listen to music with my students, improvise and talk about the mechanics and theory the music language.
You can expect a devoted teacher from me.

It is nice to know where I can improve and the subtle (to me) areas they are happening. Pick them out early, so they don’t become habits!
I do recommend João’s friendly teaching methods.
Joao is a patient and knowledgable teacher. He is great at explaining concepts and showing how they translate to the piano. He's been highly accomodating, and nothing but courteous and kind during our lessons. Highly recomended.
I can't wait either!
See you around
10/10 would recommend João!
