Information About Jo-ling - Gloucester teacher - (5 reviews)
This is how 3 referees rated Jo-ling:
I achieved Grades 1-8 Violin at a young age, then went on to study Music at Bath Spa University for 3 years. There I became the Lead Violinist of Bath Spa University Orchestra. In my performing career I have performed in many iconic venues such as The Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall, London. I studied with the British Suzuki Institute of Violin for 14 years and have now been playing violin for a total of 21 years and teaching for 9 years. I teach within schools, at home in, and at Gloucestershire Academy of Music. I have a passion for teaching pupils violin, and find great reward and satisfaction in helping others reach their full musical potential.
Violin Teacher of all ages and abilities. I enter my pupils for the ABRSM Exams from Grade 1-8 and Diploma level onwards. Music Theory Teacher of Grades 1-6. My passion for music overflows into my theory teaching. I believe it is important for theory to be engaging and inspiring, not boring and dull. My goal is always to teach pupils to love learning about the theory of music!
Not only do I aim to achieve the highest standards of teaching and learning resulting in the best possible grades, I strive for my lessons to be an enjoyable and motivational experience, as I believe this drives pupils to achieve the best results (and the best sound). My teaching style encourages pupils to develop a strong sense of musicality, where the violin becomes instinctively natural to play and beautiful to listen to.
I have experience teaching pupils with a range of specific learning difficulties including: ADHD, global delay, dyslexia, hyper mobility, dyspraxia, sensory processing and autism. I am continually undergoing teacher development to make my violin teaching as accessible as it can be. I am also experienced in arranging special access arrangements for exam entry to ensure all pupils are on an equal playing field.
Jo has got my granddaughter up to grade 6, who is in her last year of primary school. My granddaughter took her grade 4 violin exam when she was in year 4 at school. She now attends orchestra with full confidence and joy. Mixing well with the other pupils. Thanks to Jo’s dedication and enthusiasm making lessons fun and rewarding.
Hayley (Violin Mum)
My daughter had lost interest in the violin. After a year of no lessons, we tried a fresh start with Jo. My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed playing her instrument again. Finding the right teacher was important. According to my daughter, lessons with Jo are “amazing”
Kristina (Adult Pupil)
I have had lessons with Jo since the start of October and I am enjoying every session I go along to. In the past, I have had cello lessons but I always left feeling that I had not really learnt anything. With Jo, however, this is different! She is patient and very clear with her teaching and every time I leave, I feel I have accomplished something. I also like the fact Jo listens to my needs, helping me learn pieces of music that I have requested. As a teacher myself, I know the importance of the above qualities and I have every intention of continuing with Jo because of this. I can not recommend her enough!
Stacey (Violin Mum of Twins)
My 6 year old twins have been learning to play the violin with Jo for almost 7 months now. We have no musical background and we are all learning about the violin and how to read music together. Jo has been so patient and encouraging with the girls who are taking small but steady steps in learning how to play. She pitches their lessons to the right level and each week my girls come away feeling more confident and eager to learn more. I would recommend Jo to anyone with young children, she is fantastic!
Sade (Violin Mum)
My daughter started to learn to play the violin 3 years ago, I didn’t notice much progress and decided to switch her tutor. Jo started teaching my daughter about 7 months ago, and the difference is outstanding. My daughter‘s confidence has grown exponentially, I have noticed a difference in the quality of the pieces she’s playing. She is also working towards achieving her grade 1 examination. I would recommend Jo to any parent looking for a violin tutor, she patient and my daughter has learnt a great amount in a short period.
Excellent job Jo!
Corey (Adult beginner aged 23)
I would definitely recommend Jo as a teacher! She is professional, flexible, friendly and tailored my lessons to my interests and needs. As an adult beginner, Jo helped me to pass ABRSM Grade 3 violin exam with a Merit in just 9 months of starting learning violin. I am really happy with my progress. All round excellent music teacher!
Moira (Older Adult Beginner)
Jo is very patient with ‘oldies’ - she pushes you which is great - even if you know you aren’t that great haha - I would definitely recommend - you get to play duets with Jo - and hear how the violin should sound! Very inspiring.

I would highly recommend Jo to anyone.
She is lovely and kind. We're going to have her at least once a month from now on.
I’m so sorry to hear you felt my service to you was not satisfactory. I hope in our two lessons you were able to learn the basics of holding the violin & bow, plus how to play with different rhythms and identify the different strings and parts of the violin. I am hoping you can go on and progress on this with a new teacher.
As per my message to you I’m really sorry but I’m afraid my circumstances have changed & I can no longer teach you as arranged. You did really well in the lessons we had & I really recommend that you proceed with a new teacher.
My apologies again, all the best with everything.
