Personal Description:

Hello, I'm Jim.
I have been drumming for roughly fifteen years, and during that time have had the opportunity to perform in orchestras, brass bands, drum duets, jazz ensembles, and punk bands. As a teenager I played at drum conventions and music competitions, leading to the chance to play with some incredible musicians (including Dame Evelyn Glennie). I earned my grade eight certificate for the Drum Kit with Trinity in 2006 after which I worked as an engineer in recording studios, gained a Bachelor's Degree in music from Kingston University in 2009, and then an MA in Musicology from the University of Amsterdam last year.

Tutoring Experience:

Though I have no consistent teaching experience, I have given lessons sporadically to those who wanted to improve their technique and break bad habits. My own musical learning experiences have been quite comprehensive ranging from classical training necessitated by the Trinity grades, to being confident enough to perform in large and intimate venues around the world.

Tutoring Approach:

I would base my lesson structure upon my own practice structure, that being an hour split into thirds.

The first third will focus on warming up and technique. Practicing rudiments, rolls, and time keeping will improve stamina and technique.

The second third will focus upon the application of music theory by learning pieces of music from scores. These pieces of music will vary in style so that the pupil has a well rounded repertoire, but will be appropriate to their level of learning.

The third section will focus on performance, that being improvisation and jamming. It will act as a chance for the pupil to consider styles of music that he or she enjoys playing, and will hopefully act as a means to build confidence.

The larger structure will use the Trinity grading system to keep developing the pupil's skillset over a series of lessons.
